I think that was a later addition to the barrel, for some reason. My old one (gone now) only had an orange end dot (like old BIC ballpoint pens), and not the whole top 1/2" of the barrel.

Last time I had captain crunch I was probably 8-9. I do remember it tore the hell out of the top of your mouth though but the taste was great as I remember lol.
