Another caution, for us southern brothers.

If this does happen at night, DO NOT jump in the water to "save" your $350.00 rod and reel if you do not know what is at the other end of the pole.

Also, don't laugh at someone else on the pier when something bad happens. I did that and on my next cast (I was casting low and going under the pier to cast out), my line wrapped around a pillars under the pier and when I started to cast out, bam... Rod/reel into the Gulf. Needless to say I was unhappy... Karma...

Not if a piece of the can gets imbedded into your leg. Well it wasn't my leg but my wifes. I thought it was funny until she kicked my arse.

This reminds me of one time I was fishing off a pier in Florida. About 12 hours of fishing and NO BITES! No one on the pier was having any luck and then BAM, something hits the line hard and needless to say I was very excited. So excited that I wasn't paying attention to how quickly I was reeling her in and then snap, the line broke. I was so pissed that (without thinking) I threw the rod/reel over the pier. It was one of those moments that as I let go of the rod I thought to myself "this is a horrible idea." Needless to say, my day was done.
