Having smoked many cabs of the Punch Rothschild and when I say many, I'm talking at least 10 50 count boxes of them.
I can say they have always had a problem unraveling. I know my cigars and how to store them. After such a extensive background with them, the source you bought them from could be fine. I've also toured their factory down in Danli, Honduras and the QC on them is pretty bad. I still love a Punch Rothschild till this day. I will bash any cigar if the QC sucks. Just look at some of my Opus X reviews and I don't know anyone that is a big a whore of Opus X than myself. I've bashed plenty of Opus X and I will still buy them.
I had similar thoughts on this. I have a soft spot for Punch, Excalibur, and El Rey del Mundo. And yes, the caps often do come loose. I moisten my tips very well, and I use Palio or Xikar cutters. That said, I can't remember any unravelling to the point making the cigar unsmokeable. I also only smoke about a box of each, on a good year, and I smoke at least a box of cigars a week. Why? I like certain things about them, and they fill a sort of nostalgic soft spot for ME. I personally would never, ever, say that they are top shelf cigars.
You have to smoke what you like, and there is a differance between what you like, and any particular brand's quality, image, reputation, etc. Therefore, taking a learned, but critical comment personally, i.e., letting it upset you personally, and then becoming abrasive, is not really necessary. The cigar was put into it's proper perspective.
That is what you get from experienced smokers. You can go, and I promise you that no one will miss you. You can stay, read the rules, understand the culture and protocols, and you have a chance to enrich your life. For what cost? patience, restraint, and an ability to really listen until the lightbulb goes off.
The holy grail in the cigar world is the perfect cigar for 3 bucks. Many of us enjoy that hunt. Many will give you an example, like you Padron Delicias, 2000, and 3000 fitting into that category. If 3 dollar cigars were really that good, folks on this site might not be buying as many 200 plus dollar Top shelf boxes of Fuente, Padron, La Flor, etc. Yea, General sells a crap load of cigars, to a market segment. When have you heard that Punch Rothschilds were backordered for 3 months. So, we have differant segments. You find what you like, and be secure in it. Let other be secure in theirs, as well. And never, ever, take a critical comment on a cigar personally. We all know better.
