The Palio Burl Wood Cigar Cutter

Yeah, I have one of those and it almost matches the wood on the inside of the BMW perfectly. It's awesome. ;)

...But it is by far the BEST cutter I've ever used, my xikar is rendered useless.

Not to thread jack you Wilkey, but I am in the market for a good sharp cutter and I have considered both, Xikar and Palio. Is Xikar inferior? Or...is it just a matter of taste? Any suggestions?

C&G...you could lose a finger with that thing!

I have owned both Palios and Xikar cutters. I have found the Xikar cutters tend to dull over time and pinch the cigar while cutting. ( They do have a lifetime warranty which includes sharpening, but who wants to have to send it in for repairs every few years? A pain in the ass IMO. ) My Palios have been sent through the washer more than a few times, and dropped repeatedly with no harm done to the piece - I have seen more than a few posts of Xikars ending up in pieces. My Palios have remained sharp - they need a soak in rubbing alcohol every so often to preventing them from sticking. The Xikar is a nicer looking show piece, but not as faithful.

I prefer the Palio.

The SAK works best for me, especially when using the circumcision method of cutting a cigar. ...It of course has other uses, like opening your imported beer, cans of beans, and skinning the occasional harvested game.

Doc.

Thanks, Gents. I realized after thread jacking Wilkey, that I could try search... Hey...what do you know...it worked!
Seems you folks had this conversation in September. Hmmmm...I do like the idea of a cigar cutter/survival Rambo knife..., but I may go the Palio route. But, then again, Palio does not have a single cutter in Mammoth tusk...

C&G...I need a new toy!

I bought a Palio cutter based on the recommendations in this thread. It really is quite sharp compared to my other cutters, and the warranty made it the smartest choice. While the Xikar looks cooler, I don't want to have to send it in for sharpening or repairs, as MMM pointed out. Palio really stands behind their product.

Hi Kelly,

Sorry to get back to your question so late. My impressions and findings are exactly as MMM stated.

I also prefer the grip holes on the Palio. After using a Davidoff double-blade guillotine for 10 years, the Palio is more natural, feels more secure because of the finger holes. To be honest, if using the slit-and-lift method, a sharp pocket knife is the best tool of all and affords the finest degree of control and touch.

I also enjoy the crisp *snik* sound when I flick open my Benchmade. :D

I have owned my Davidoff for about 10 yrs as well but found it to have grown a little duller and occassionally ripping wrappers. My xikar has recently returned from KC after the springs went off in it and is just a pleasure to use. At this point, very sharp. Just ordered my Burl wood finish Palio from Mark at Cigarmony, and hope to have many happy yrs of snipping. Either that, or I can rent it out on saturdays.

I got a Palio from my secret santa and I was amazed at how well the thing cuts. I don't know how I ever got by without one now!

hahaha

....always risky to start a religious argument like cutter preference....

I've got a Xikar and have never felt the need for another. It's sharp as heck and I can do the "score and lift" cut with it to perfection. I hold the blades against the cap and rotate the cigar in the stationary blade a little over 180 degrees and the cap usually falls off.

I think it's important to keep the blades clean. When mine feel like it's getting a little "dull" that means it's time for an alcohol wipe to clean the blades. Back to razor sharp perfection once clean and dry. I wonder how many other folks think they have "dull" cutters that really just need a good solvent based cleaning... :whistling:

The Palio looks interesting, but I've never felt I could do any better than what's here now.

IMO, it's like day and night. I have several Xikar's, went from i to ii to iii, used to love them until I got a Palio.

Besides the fact that the Palio is supposed to be self sharpening, it's lighter, easier to hold in my hand, scores and cuts easier in a straight line and lastly,
even though I'm smoking one cigar a day right now, I carry the Palio in my pocket...I like the feel and at times, find myself playing with it. That's the Palio
I play with gents, so no wise cracks!
