Hey guys. I’m a newbie here but I’ve been lurking for a bit. I’ve been smoking cigars for about 6 months or so. I’m still searching for my favorite every day cigar. I just ordered a bunch of 5-er’s last night, maybe I’ll find something interesting. ;)

Anyway, I want to buy a new humidor. I currently have a 100 count desktop and it’s getting pretty crowded in there. I also feel like it doesn’t hold its RH as long as it should. I use Viper’s beads which are great, but I notice they dry out after a week or so. The seal must be leaking. Anyway, I was planning on going with The Connoisseur 1200 count cabinet from Dave @ Cheaphumidors.com. Does anyone have any experience with this cabinet? What do you use to keep RH steady? Beads, Oasis, crystals? Also, does anyone have any pics of it with the glass door?

Thanks!

Dominick

Welcome to CP!! Get some of Vipers' beads, they'll do the trick.

Thanks for the welcome! I figured the beads were the best way to go. How many do you think I’d need for this humi? The dimensions are 22" W x 24" D x 28" H.

Dom

Thanks for the link. According to the calculation on Viper’s site, I’ll need 1.7 pounds of beads. I’ll just round it up to 2 whole pounds. Also, I’m ready to order the humidor, just not sure if I should get the glass door or not. Anyone?

These are the sticks I ordered last night. Nothing fancy, just looking for a good everyday smoke.

Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte

Romeo Y Julieta Churchill Tubo’s

Punch Rare Corojo Rothschild

Padron 2000

Padron 3000

Onyx Reserve #4

Gran Habano #5 Rothschild

Arturo Fuente 858

What do you guys think? Anything good here?

Keep in mind that those dimensions are the outside dimensions, I believe. The inside is going to be smaller than that, so you will need fewer beads.

I just ordered this humidor also, expecting delivery sometime in June. From what other members have said, this is a great humidor. The only problem I have read about is that the hinges sometimes need to be adjusted.

There is a link to the post I made, some comments and feedback in there to read.

And there is a link to Swissy's topic discussing the hinges.

Hope you enjoy the new humidor! Oh and welcome to CP!

Thanks Nathan. I e-mailed Dave and asked him the inside dimensions. Are there any cons to having a glass door? I think it should be okay as long as the humi is not in direct sunlight, right? I’d like to be able to check the RH without opening the door and letting all the humidity out every time.

Other than the fact that it is more expensive, I don't think there is any cons.: D As you said, just don't have it in direct sunlight and you should be fine. If you really want to check your humidity without opening the door, I believe there are wireless hygrometers out now.

Radioshack

Quick Google search brought that up. I have never used it, but I am sure other BOTLs will recommend a good wireless hygrometer.

Very cool! I'm going to see what I can find out about that wireless hygrometer.

Thanks again Nathan!

I was looking at the one you mentioned and this one from tampahumidors.com
the Trivoli it looks more functional because you can store boxes in the bottom and lift the top for access to singles... I have my eye on a few humidors and the conni and the trivoli are two of them

I like the way the top opens like a regular desktop humi. I might go with the Trivola now.

Hey Dom,
I have the Connoisseur and love it! I use Viper's beads, I think I have 2# in it? I could be wrong about the amount tho. It holds the RH% just fine, now that I have the seal sorted out. Mine had a hinge that was off slightly and after a few months, it wore a hole in the seal. It's fixed, the hinge is adjusted properly, and I LOVE this humi. And, more importantly, so does my wife!!!! It is now part of the downstairs decor, whereas my old coolidor was hidden away from sight.

for the price, the size and the looks, you can't go wrong with this humi. if you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Swissy, how does it hold RH? Does the top drawer seal well?

Dom

I won't answer for Swissy, but must tell you that I too have this Connoisseur and love it! I too had hinge problems which were easily fixable, and very early on the top drawer wouldn't fully extend out. I was soon to find out that there was an errant nut or bolt wedged in the most innappropriate place. Once I removed it the drawer slides like a dream!

I use the Oregon Scientific wireless RH%/temp remotes (3 of them), placed in (1) the top drawer, (2) the highest shelf, and (3) the lowest shelf. I use 2 Cigar Oasis (on XL and one regular Cigar Oasis plus), one placed on the top shelf, the other on the bottom. The RH% only seems to change when there is ambient temperature fluctuations. In other words, rock solid RH% !!

Believe me, you really ought to get this cabinet. Its gorgeous, and though my fiance is totally against me smoking cigars, she absolutely loves the Connoisseur. Its truly a beauty to behold.

Take the plunge, you'll be thankful you did!

I don't have anything against the glass door option. I just like the fact that it looks more like a classy piece of furniture with the all wood look. I guess its just more appealing to me.
