Tat Cojonu v. Ashton VSG

Made a road trip with my kids today to the Memphis zoo. On the way home, I stopped in a couple of B & M's and picked up a bunch of premium singles. One of the shops had a bunch of Tats (which I hadn't tried), so I picked up a couple of Cojonu 2003's. I also picked up a VSG Sorcerer, since I enjoyed the heck out of a Wizard I smoked yesterday.

I smoked the Tat first and thought it was nice and smooth, but not a lot of character to it. There was nothing really to complain about. It had a nice construction and nice burn. It went out with about 2" left, which I thought sucked, but all in all a decent smoke.

A little while later, I lit up the Sorcerer and, at least to me, there is no comparison. The Sorcerer, like the Wizard, is full of flavor . . . a lot more robust. I thought the Wizard was a little mild, but this one seemed to have a little more kick to it. I also liked the smaller size better.

Anyway, I have read a lot about the Tats and the 2003 cost more than the VSG. I must say that I wonder why someone would smoke it over what I feel is a far superior cigar?

That's the beauty of cigars, taste is subjective. What you love someone else may not like, and what you may not like someone else may love! I'm interested in jumping on the Tat bandwagon, and having just smoked a VSG I'll have a good reference point to your comparisons. I might stop by the B&M to pick one up and let you know what I think!
 
I'm not sure I could delete either of those cigars from my faves list.

The Tat Cojonu '03 is an absolutely stellar cigar . . . and so is virtually every VSG I've ever smoked. Different tastes, both exceptional.

See, I thought they both were similar in taste, just that the VSG had a lot more of it and really ramped up at the end. I probably said it wrong. I'm not saying the Tat is bad at all . . . I enjoyed it . . . just to me the VSG took the good of the Tat and improved on it.
 
And I felt the opposite. :) I love the VSG line but to me it is more one dimensional than the tat brown line. Love the Tat brown and red line, pretty much all of em, like the VSG, but the Tats win out for my palate! :)

P.S. That is again what makes us all unique, everything is good for some and trash for others!
 
I love both these Cigars but the 2003 is not one of my favorite tats. I really like the Reserva SW the best of the brown line. Also i really enjoy tats at a lower humidity level than most of my other cigars it really seems to bring out the flavors more. Most B&M's keep everything together and around 70% humidity which is perfect for the Vsg's but not for the tats.
 
I adore both of those cigars. I would give the 2003 another shot.

The RH at your B&M could very well have had something to do with it. I keep my tats in a seperate box at a lower RH than my other smokes for the same reasons noted above.
 
To me, the Cojonu is very rich and syrupy when fresh. A few months or so, depending on how much air they get, they will lose the syrupy quality, and become very rounded/balanced. I also like them at a lower humidity than 70.
I haven't had a Tatuaje, or a VSG, I didn't like.

I actually keep a large desktop humi at lower RH for stuff I'm smoking currently. My cooler stays around 70, but my other is about 63-66. I find these almost always smoke better and taste better.
 
Hah, I think I was at the memphis zoo the same day you were. Weird.

I'm a BIG fan of VSG's with a year or two on them, fresh they're not so great, but they really open up with some age.
