Tat Black Lable

I had the chance to smoke one of these yesterday courtesy of JFields. I normally prefer something with a larger ring guage due to horrible luck with plugged skinnies. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how well this one drew. I carefully shaved the cap off to start so as not to cut it too wide. I wanted to get the closed foot burnt off before I settled on the cut/draw ratio. In the end I only trimmed of a bit more. For the most part this smoke burned evenly the entire time. Only once, after I set it down and stepped away for a few minutes, did I take the torch to it to even it up a bit. For the first 2-5 minutes I thought this cigar was going to be something spicy. This was not the case. While it started out strong, perhaps from the extra wrapper leaf on the closed foot, it quickly mellowed into something similar to my experiences with the Guapo. I imagine the tobacco is very different, but the Guapo tasted similar to me in terms of overall strength. I usually take 3 puffs when I draw a cigar, the third being the stongest. While this cigar didn't provide as much smoke as any of the 1926s, it was rather voluminous in terms of thickness. The ash remained a light gray throughout the smoke and was not very flaky. I was able to smoke it down to the nub without regret. Overall I really enjoyed this smoke. However, I think I would enjoy it much more in a larger vitola such as a torpedo or double robusto. In some ways it reminds me of the Opus #5. I love the Opus, but sometimes the #5 just doesn't really bring anything to the table. I don't ever regret the smoke, it just sometimes doesn't do anything for me. I feel the same about this smoke. I'll enjoy smoking it, but it may not do anything for me sometimes.

I bought a fiver a few weeks ago. I have smoked one so far and wasn't that impressed. It was a strong smoke with bold tobacco flavors and not much else. It had no subtlety and didn't develop at all. It didn't taste bad but I sure don't think it was worth $12 and change. I laid the rest down and will revisit them after at least a few months to see if anything has changed.

As far as my Tatuaje tastes go, I find the Brown label to be similar to my description above - not bad but not great. However, I found the Havana VI's to be much more interesting and a pretty tasty smoke. The browns are rated as full bodied while the Reds are medium to full. From what I tasted, the Blacks were at least on par with the Browns so I am sure that explains my experience.

I haven't tried a Black Label yet. I had to sit and watch in envy as Geoff(stinkimonki) smoked it in front of me... Anyway, I wanted to take this time to profess my undying love for Tatuaje cigars. :-D

@ StinkiMonki

You call 46 ring gauge a skinny? :0

@ sanchopanza

Love the ink and how appropriate...Pete's tattoos inspired the name Tatuaje inspired your tatoo! And about your sig...I'm with you all the way! I really hate this trend of 52 ring gauge and up....coronas and panetelas are my bread and butter.

I hope for your sake that Tat doesn't go the way of so many boutique brands....

It wouldn't matter, anyway... I would still have the memories of them...

One of the finest cigars I've had in a long time. Honestly, I can't say enough about it. I love the brown labels but this was even better.

The more I read this thread, the more convinced I am that John and I got shafted at Holts by bad stock.

But there ya go! Never judge a blend by one experience.

I'll have to agree with mu mike on this. One of the best I've smoked. For me, pete and pepin smokes tend to smoke a little better (in taste) at a lower humidity or some time in the dry box.

I tried mine right from the humidor and the other one I tried after sitting out for a few hours. Both were good, but I wasn't floored by them.

I doubt it... perhaps you just don't like them (tastes vary)... who knows :)

I do agree that no line of cigars can be judged by just one (or even a couple) of cigars, given the variance of handmade cigars.

Although I may just not like this blend, previous to this I never had a Tat I didn't thoroughly enjoy. That's why I was so surprised. Bought it at Holts and walked right upstairs to Mahogs and fired it up.

The best cigar I smoked that day was a San Cristobal Supremo - my second. Blew the Tat Black away! In fact, I've decided to get a box! But that's another story.

The blacks are definately different than the other blends and they are definately either "like em or not" kind of smokes. To me, they are very reminiscent of ISOM's from back in the 80's. If you're a fan of the strong, "in your face" , super peppery Pepin sticks, you may think these taste flat or even bland. I'm a big fan of the brown label but don't like the red's. To me the blacks have topped the list as, they remind me of back in the day. Like Andrew says though, to each his own and its all about finding what you enjoy most. Pete's done a great job in creating a lines which cover the whole spectrum. If you have't tried one, I'd definately say try one and if you like em great, if not, you can send them my way ;) G1

I got a taste that can only be described as mulch from the one I smoked. I did not even feel convinced enough to finish the cigar.

Some may like to call the Black Label a different "taste" but I've got another word for it. Make no mistake, it was a poor smoking experience.

Yikes.....I'll be trying one soon thanks to a CP member :)

I am a big Tatuaje fan, and am looking forward to trying one of these. Thanks for the continued reviews, fellas, it is interesting to see people's first thoughts of highly anticipated new releases like this, the ESG, etc.
