Taboada Border trouble

I had a similar experience (and it wasn't even cigar related). Friend of mines father was mayor of Tecate, Mexico at the time and I was invited down for dinner at their house. I bought two bottles of Tequila, and at the last minute, I was gifted another bottle before arriving at the border station.

I told them I had a couple of bottles of Tequila and that's it. They popped the trunk, I was detained for 45 minutes over 1 extra bottle of Tequila. You are only allowed to bring two bottles across the border. I told them to keep one of the bottles or toss it.

My suspicion is that it had more to do with post 9/11 heightened security. But I honestly dont know, and dont want to have to through that kind of an experience again. I'll just buy the Tequila here if I need it.

For the cigars... courier service with a guarantee, as mentioned above, is the best way to go... Does LCDH TJ guarantee?

I'd wager the border agents were just looking for a little payola. While spending time down in El Paso, my brother and I regularly went across the border. One of the times, we were waiting in a huge long line to cross back into the US. There was another short line that was moving very quickly, so my brother (who is fluent in Spanish) decided to see what's up:

Brother: What is this long line for?
Border Agent: Crossing back into the USA
Brother: What's that short line for?
Border Agent: Crossing into the USA
Brother: What's the difference?
Border Agent: We are accepting donations for the short line

We paid him the equivalent of $20 and whisked on through.

That was my first thought... Seems like all those questions about the job and the car were to gauge if you were financially capable of greasing his palms.

Andrew... this was a US Border agent (customs/homeland security)... 100% American...

If it were a Mexican border agent, given that I just had dinner at the then mayors house, he wouldn't have dared asked me for money.

S*** happens! Glad you are not in some TJ jail, being made love by some guy named Juan (Bubba) Ernesto Garcia de la Hoya :D No problem on my end, I'm still in. Thanks for going through all this the trouble for us

Hey...I have a friend named Juan (Bubba) Ernesto Garcia de la Hoya...how dare you infer that he's gay... ;) :D

Sorry to hear about your bad luck Atuck.

FYI, you can bring back as much tobacco and alcohol as you'd like, you just have to pay taxes on anything over the allowed limit (which can be nothing depending on how long you stay). We used to go to Canada all the time during college and bring back bottles of liquor. We just had to pay taxes (less than $3 a bottle) on every bottle we brought back. If we'd stayed 24 hours, we would've been able to bring some back tax free.

Agree with both you and Ironworker... At the time, and I dont know if it is true still, there was an absolute 2 liter limit on TEQUILA. All other bottles would be taxed according to price. I dont know what the rule is currently.

Last year while visiting my grandmother in Texas, me and my dad went to Mexico (only a 15 min. drive from her house). The rule then was 1 litre of alcohol per every adult over 21. He had 2 litres and had to pay taxes on 1 bottle which was may'be $1.50-$2.00

Only in quantity allowed duty free and tax amounts, not the principle of the rule. I've been to several other countries where I've imported taxable amounts of alcohol and that's always been the rule. You can read more about it here:

I'd bet there were a few Custom's agent laughing about this one for the rest of the day......
