Well... summer is about here. That means my fav pastime... fishing! And with missing all last summer due to an injury, I got some serious making up to do. So... I'm branching out into shrimping! I figure with the cost of the fuel, fees and time, I may as well make the damn boat work a little harder.

So today my brother and I took the boat into the pristine Prince William Sound (home of the Exxon Oil Spill - you can still find evidence of the oil BTW) and tried our hand. I've never done it before, neither had he, and what a blast we had. It was more of an exploratory trip, learning the gear, methods, and so on. We only let the pots soak for about 1½ hours, when they normally go for a minimum of 4, and the more the better. The water was bad out farther, so we only went to the other side of the bay from the harbor, where everyone goes since it's close and protected. I'm sure it's heavily fished, but like I said, it was more of a learning trip. But even still, we got roughly ¾ a gallon. Not very good, but I have a better idea on what the hell I'm doing now!

Cool thing is, I bought a sweet camera mount for the boat, so I'll have video soon. Hopefully showing pots FULL of shrimp landing in the boat...

My nephew and I are heading out Saturday to go farther is the water is better, and we'll have the video running, cigars lit, fishing poles jigging for rockfish and with luck loads of shrimp in the cooler. Not to mention on the grill - I bought a stainless propane grill to cook these suckers up right out of the pot!

That shrimp looks mighty tasty and SHWEEEET Jim! The head looks like it holds a lot of meat, how far down are the pots?

Its to small throw it back and try for the bigger ones!!!

Looks like Jon's man crush has shifted again. :sign:

Congrats on expanding into shrimping. Even if its a really small scale that is still a good looking shrimp. Where my mom lives at in Texas you can get
fresh shrimp for $4 a pound. Well that was before the BP mess in the Gulf of Mexico. Now it will be through the roof. :(

That is awesome Jim! Great to see you're finally getting out there again, and shrimping too? That is too cool brother!

Cajun shrimp, shrimp gumbo, popcorn shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp scampi, shrimp salad......

Looks like fine Jim!

I worked as a deckhand fishing shrimp in the sound back in the 80's. We set our gear in about 300 fathoms. Bait was fish meal mixed with fish oil to form a paste.

I love the spots, they are great shrimp and they don't come out of a pond in China.

Where are you putting out, Seward or Whittier? Our fishing grounds were between Disk Island and Montague.

Ah the good old days.....

The shrimpin' is one thing, but the scenery surrounding you is breathtaking Jim...damn! I imagine you never tire of that.

Good luck, can't wait to see the pics and video.

Safe voyage...

* God grant that I may live to fish
* Until my dying day
* And when it comes to my last cast
* I then most humbly pray
* When in the Lord's safe landing net
* I'm peacefully asleep
* That in his mercy I be judged
* As "good enough to keep"

Did you bite that things head off for the next photo?

That is livin' the life, Jim. I miss AK. I need some more halibut. Time to put a leave of absence request with the wife.

Haha... yeah, it was fun. Can't wait to go out farther and fish an area that is not as heavily used. Dropped the pots in about 450-500ft, which was pretty cool as we were only about 100ft off the shore! Deep and steep, that's what you look for.

Matt, we are leaving out of Whittier... crappy little town that gouges you for every nickel and dime, but it's the entrance to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Our test run yesterday was simply across the passage from town at the waterfalls. Tomorrow hopefully the weather will hold and we'll make it up College Fjord or to Cochrain Bay, both I hear are good if you can get to them.

Here's the other pic I forgot to post... the bucket is the Costco sized kitty litter pail.

Wow, Jim! Those are some beautiful creatures. I bet they taste even better! Nice to see you were able to enjoy some time on the water learning a new technique.

I'm content to experience Alaskan shrimping over the internet. The color of your hand in that first pic made my jewels immediately seek cover deep within my abdominal cavity.

OH.MY.GOD.

If you've never had fresh from the ocean never frozen shrimp before... you gotta try it if given the opportunity! HOLY CRAP! Talk about succulent. Totally different texture that what you get in the store. A little melted butter, minced garlic added in, and a few minutes on the grill and HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!! Paired with a really nice Oregon Pinot Gris, and WOW. I can't wait till I bring up a full pot or two. I threw the biggest and best in the freezer so Mary and I could enjoy them later (long story but she cannot have pretty much anything fresh) so these are the worst of the bunch...

and then there is Porter... now the consumate Shrimp Hound! And I thought he like snobby cigars! He damn near licked the fully hot cooking temp grill!! :0
(he did manage to lick the tongs I was using tho!)

So. Jealous.
I could eat shrimp for days. I can't imagine what it would be like if I could catch them fresh.

You need to do some Bacon wrapped shrimp on the grill. Will definitely help the poor shrimp out and they are great to eat. Long as you don't burn the bacon.
