Staging area in the coolidor

Sorry for my ignorance here, but Wilkey, can you give a somewhat detailed description of what you mean and how you actually do that? I've found that I prefer my sticks a little more on the moist side too, I like the flavors better and it seems to me, that if they're more toward 60-55% that they seem somewhat harsh, bitter or grassy.

Thanks,
Wade

If I need to smoke something right out of one of the storage coolers, I give them a quick rinse in filtered water to toughen up the wrapper (to prevent cracking/splitting) and to kick start the moistening process which occurs during smoking.

Wilkey

I asked him the same question in another post ---> Linky

Works great! However, soaking a stick in Port for minutes is NOT the same. The cigar absorbs the port, why not just buy a flavored cigar rather then waste a good stick - Just my 0.02.

Try it sometime. Use a shotglass and put about 1/4 inch in the bottom, once you put the cigar in it will come up to 1/2 inch. Let it sit for 2 3 minutes and then take it out and let it dry for a few minutes. Do it with a stick that isn't going to upset you if you don't like it.

Bobby,
All my coolers are in the basement in roughly the same area. The temperature is consistent between coolers within 1 or 2 degrees year round. You'll have to swing over some time and check out my cigar "cave." It sure isn't as classy as Eric's multiple cabinets, but it does work with a sort of ghetto chic. :p

The port idea sounds interesting but I never would have thought to try it. Wine, unlike distilled spirits, has plenty of dissolved organic solids and I would have guessed that these would taste nasty upon combustion. Have you ever noticed? An emptied wine or port glass the next day does not smell particularly appetizing. However, an emptied glass that once held rum or cognac smells densely aromatic right after the residual water and alcohol have evaporated.

Cigarguy,
Dry boxing for a day is really not enough time, IMO. I've had to do this and when I do, I usually give it a few days at least. I've also left cigars out in the dry basement overnight in extreme circumstances. But it's really not good to rush things. You run the risk of diminishing what the smoke could deliver under ideal circumstances.

Wade,
I've had a few questions about the rinsing technique. As soon as my family is all recovered from the flu (all three of have it, daughter hitting 103F, wife and I have not slept much in over two days) I will write it up with pictures and video.

Jeff,

Soaking any stick in port is going to drastically alter the flavor of the cigar. It's a bad idea.

Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, it's only a bad idea if you don't like it.

I don't find any taste influence in the smoke, after all only 1/2 inch of the head is in the port.

Just my .02

Then why waste the port? Just put it in your mouth for a couple of seconds to get it a little wet. Serves the same purpose and your not committing alcohol abuse... :D
