Spreadsheet or database record keeping?

Both the "personal humi" page and sharing Excel spreadsheets sounds interesting. I'd be glad to help out or at a minimum input my humble humi's contents to share with the group.

Only heads up is that several nasty virus' are very happy to hide in the macro languages supported by the latest versions of Excel...got to keep "eyes wide open" anymore on shared document files. The bad thing is that's it's easy to spread them and not even know it....

Thanks for the ideas - B.B.S.

A CP humidor would be great. A nice feature would be if you could check off the cigar in your humidor you are willing to trade and a section you could list you want list. Something like dvdaficionado.com, if anyone uses it.

I'm working on a Filemaker database at the moment.  You will be able to put in pictures, notes, etc.  I'll post in here when it is done if anyone is interested.

I have not heard of the Filemaker database. I am guessing this is not specific to cigars.
How much does the program cost? (and yes I am interested) :)

Filemaker is a program for making databases. You can customize them with all the information you want. With the developer version, you can make a stand alone database (similar to a program) that anyone can use (even if they do not have Filemaker). That is my plan - to make a stand alone, customized database for my cigar inventory.

I would love to volunteer, but my coding skills blow, i could maybe hack together something really crumby, but compared to how invision works, and integrtating the user table in the invision mysql user table, is a but out of my league. However, does IPB (invision PowerBoard, what this site runs) have some sort of rating module? could be a start.

the size of this database... would require something like SQL- just my thoughts
Coders prep the knuckels and break out the sugar free redbull.

definate interest here?? running Filemaker 6 if that helps...

Filemaker is an Apple application, correct? Can that database be exported to another database format? If so I'd be interested.

Thanks all,

Thanks for the reply Swissy, However, I was kind of hoping it could be exported in a file format compatible with Microsoft Access, since I already own that, anyone know if that is possible?

TIA

Ive been putting mine in a journal because it just seems to keep me more in check with things, I dont always like to tinker with the comp lol. but, I think i'd be very interested with the online journal.

What I am working on will be self-contained and will open on both Macs and Windows-based computers. I have the basic layout done but am open to suggestions on what fields to add. Right now it has:

Brand
Vitola
Size
Wrapper
Box Code
Location
Notes
Date Purchased
Price Paid
Place to add a photo

Any other information people would like to see in a cigar inventory program? I'll post a "preview" on my server soon.

I pirated a layout for an Excel spreadsheet from Cigars for Dummies. I print out blank ones and zip off copies as needed at work.

I then hole punch them and have them in small three-ring binder. When I bring home new smokes I "log" them in and when I go to smoke them I just just bust out the binder. I call it my little black book. I hand write my comments.

I can send it as an attachment if your interested. Its pretty basic.

I have a basic spreadsheet for my cigar inventory. Here are the fields:
Number
Location (a name of a box and in which cooler)
Cost
Brand
Model
Wrapper
Shape/Vitola
Length
Ring
From
(meaning where did I get it from, out of a pass, bought from a vendor, a bomb)
Date
Retailer
(where I got the "Cost" from)
Country of origin
Strength

Since I can't read my own writing, I keep it updated on the computer. I have three computers networked together in the house so I place backup copies of large files like this on the other computers (just in case ;) )

i inventory my small holding of cigars very easily, i open the lids on my 2 desktops and look inside. kinda like this

picture taken about a week ago

but i like the idea of having something here we can all contribute to

Well you guys are just too anal for me, I open the door to the hummi and if there are boxes there I know I have inventory.

With that said Tod I think this would be a great addition to an already outstanding website.

You know I love ya Rod!

The honest truth is if my wife ever saw an actual inventory of what I have she would skin me :D
