Alright everyone, if you've followed my "Dave must be an IDIOT" pass, you know that our buddy JerryG  won my end of pass contest and is due a boatload of cigars... problem is, after going through the smaller coolerdor, I have half a dozen boatloads to get rid of!  So hears the deal, we're gonna have another contest that's only open to newbies.
Anyone with over 100 posts when the contest closes is ineligible to play.
This is going to be an essay style contest, with no topic.  Tell me a story.  Describe your best cigar.  Describe your worst cigar. Tell us about your kids birthday party. Plead your case for why you need the cigars more then someone else.  Heck, tell a good joke (or even a bad one! ) - I don't care.  'Cause I'm not going to decide the winner.

Post your essay in this thread.  You have through the weekend to write.  Please, only one entry per newbie.  Monday morning, the contest is closed, and that's where the fun starts.  Anyone with OVER 100 posts then gets to vote for a story.  You will vote for TWO people.  First choice gets "2 points", second choice gets "1 point" - no you can't choose the same person for both.  To avoid any animosity between friends, all votes should be emailed directly to me - NOT POSTED ON THE BOARD.  Voting will be closed out on Wednesday evening (3 days of voting).  Before that time, I'll try and sort through the cigars I've set aside and make it sort of even.
Now realize, you'll get good smokes, you'll get great smokes, and you'll get some pretty god awful nasty smokes.  Most of these are coming from my winnings over at CigarPool.com and my prior "Give To Your Buddies" pass, so don't blame me for what you receive.  Based on what I've separated, I'll decide how many winners we'll have.  Obviously, the highest number of votes will get the "best" selection - but they should all be pretty similar.

BTW, to all you "oldbies" - if anyone contacts you asking you to vote for them - please contact me immediately, as that person will be immediately disqualified.  I know you're not all professional writers - I don't expect you to be.  What I do expect, is for you to have fun, try your best - and don't get upset if you don't win.  Who knows, I may even award a "Boobie Prize" for the least votes (no promises).
If enough people request it, I'll even post the voting tallies (no names) when it's all over.

Before you ask, Yes - since I have over 100 posts (just a few over), I also get to vote - but I'll record my choices before I check my email Monday morning, so as not to be influenced by how the rest of the voting is going.

Sound good?
Get those fingers typing and let's see who can impress our more seasoned members best.

Good Luck Everyone!
Dave :D

BTW, everyone is welcome to comment on stories already posted - just no flaming please

"It was a dark and stormy night..."

no wait -

"...as she crept slowly round the box, nose in tune, with trepidation his tail began to wag..."

"...rock, paper, scissors, and once again you have another..."

Nice idea for a contest Dave! I look forward to the entries.

Oustanding! Lookin' forward to some fine readin'. Great idea Dave.

Michaels entry into the Mooch Contest is as follows:\

I got my start in cigars when an ex-boss of mine invited me for a cigar and a few brews at a local Pub. I had not had a cigar, save for some El Productos as a teen (I digress), in my life. The cigar? Hampton Court Macanudo. I enjoyed it, and then forgot it over a half dozen Black & Tans. But the taste for cigars seemed to follow me everywhere I went. I found myself searching high and low to satisfy that urge. I tried AyC, Garcia Vega, and Swisher Sweets. Nothing hit the spot. Then I found Miami Sweets, rum flavor. They kind of did the trick. I smoked them anytime I had a minute, I was hooked.

I got re-married in May of 1999 and kept up my smoking anytime I could sneak out to the patio. I hid in shame (everyone smoking Miami Sweets hides, so I hear) and enjoyed my disgusting habit. Then one of my Bride's friends threw us a late wedding shower. I know the guys will wonder what a guy does at a wedding shower but let me finish. The lady giving the party had a "friend" who kept his nice 75 count Humidor in her living room (tic). He invited me over to the table where it sat and I looked at this wonderful Burl wood box and waiting as he carefully lifted the lid. What I saw inside was the likes of which I had never seen. There were Puros of many shapes and sizes, some of which I never knew existed. And the bands proclaimed them to be of origin heretofore unknown to a backwoods boy like me. There were Fuentes, Partagas, Hoyo de Something or other, Cohiba and many with no bands at all. Bill has just told me that I can take my pick, as the guest of honor. I can scarcely remember my bride's name at this point.

Some of those cigars looked pretty nasty. They were all dark, had this white powdery stuff on them. I decided that I could not possibly enjoy the hobby as much as Bill. Opting to take one of the skanks as opposed to one of the beauties, I chose one of those "moldy" ones. Bill knows cigars, and it seems that he might have been afraid that my pallet would not take kindly to a "good" cigar and was therefore kind enough to let me back out gently as he told me that the one I had in my hand actually came from Cuba hidden in a friends laundry bag. I told him I am sure that he will get far more enjoyment from such a cigar than I would, and I chose one of the Fuente sticks.

It was something called a Don Carlos. As I toasted the foot the aroma of fine leaves touched my nostrils. The smell was both intriguing and intoxicating. Then the moment I had yet to savor in my young life (38 years young) was at hand. I starting rotating the puro with the flame a fraction of an inch from the tip. When I was sure that it was well lit, I stopped drawing and was rewarded with a nice plume of flame which settled into a warm glow. I drew my first clean puff from the Fuente and have never looked back. To this day, I have a gag reflex to anything that contains a "Man Made" binder.

Oh, the puro I was about to pick that night, I found out sometime after, was a Cohiba ISOM, Belicoso
I believe it was.

Note to self: See a shrink about this constant kicking of your own butt.

Man oh man - are you trying to scare off the competition or what?
Very cool story my friend.

To all the other newbies: Don't let PurosBrat's long story dissuade you - everyone has an equal chance here!

Dave :D

Well, I am about as new as they get with this being my third post!

I first statred smoking cigars in college during the Wed. night poker games. This was about seven years ago but I truely became a cigar lover in May of 1996 while at a professional convention.

We were at Virginia Beach and a group of friends and I decided to pary-harty  :D  Well, it got to be about 12:30 am and we were begining to think about the next morning  :(  My best friend suggests that we hit the hotel lounge for a night cap because he said he new how to avoid the inevitable next morning's hangover. We entered the lounge and the bartender was a beautiful long legged blonde thirty something woman.

She informed us that she was closing in ten minutes and that we had time for one drink (she appeared a little frazzled). We ordered and my friend walked to the other end of the bar where he purchased a cigar for each of us.

We were waiting for the bartender to bring the beverages we ordered ( My friend insisted on ordering us each a sniffer of Clock Tower Port) While we were waiting we lit our cigars.

As the bartender returned she smelled the cigars and her distraught look began to turn into a look of anticipation. She reminded us that she had to close and added that if we would buy her a cigar she would allow us to stay longer. So we did.

We wound up staying in the lounge until 4:30am and smoked many cigars of which we paid for just the first three and finished the new bottle of Clock Tower Port that the bartender had opened for our original order. What a night! And sure enough when I awoke after just 2 1/2 hours sleep I had no signs of hangover in my future.

The bartender had just broken up with her long time boyfriend and she just needed to unwind. She told us when we left that we were the nicest guys she had met in a long time and that our conversations had really made her feel better. I guess that evening showed me the power of a good friend and good times, and how a fine cigar can lead to finding both!

Thats my story and I'm Sticking to it!!! I would really like to win this contest because this year will mark the six year anniversary of that evening and the convention is returning to Virginia Beach for the first time since '96 and my friend and I are planning to celebrate the anniversary of the '96 convention. The bartender by the way now owns the lounge and has welcomed us back for the festivities!

"The only thing that beats a great stick is a PHAT ASH!"

Another excellent story! Nice one Phatty (seems like the proper nick name :D ). Good luck with your story.

Dave

One of my dream careers back in High School was to join the Coast Guard. I wanted to jump out of helicopters to resuce people in the ocean. Well a few years out of High School I finally realized that dream. But in order to join, my wife had to quit a promising career recently started. But I promised her that when we were financially stable, I would put her through Massage Therapy School. This was 7 years ago. She had suffered through boring and poor paying jobs for 7 years.

Well, last year we were finally stable. We had paid down most of our debt. Had some money put away. And I was guaranteed to be on land duty for another 2 years. I put her through school and told her she didn't need to get a part time job. Just concentrate on school and get your diploma. Well let me tell you how fast you can rack up debt with 3 kids and 1 income!

Six months of going to massage school 7 hours a day for 1 subject only is brain wracking. Least that is what she called it. When I did it for electronics, I called it a nightmare(no free massages in electronics)! But she finally got to her last week. For a graduation present I got her diamond earrings and a ruby necklace. She was absolutely floored(so was my credit card). But lucky enough there was just enough room on it for a new El Rey humi and 4 bundles to put in it. Now all my buying is done until we aren't as broke. Could be a while since the millitary doesn't pay well at all. So if you ever write your Congressman or Senator, please cast your support for fair wages for active duty milltary(shameless plug)
:D
I do have a few nice sticks put away for special occassions. Plan on smoking a FFOX on my next promotion(May 1). With my raise I plan on buying 1 more box of something nice, so I won't have to smoke seconds all the time. Thanks again to everyone who participated in my Seconds and Alts pass(my 1st one!) I hope to be in many more passes to come.

I hope my high school English teacher doesn't read this. Between grammar and spelling, it is not my best work. lol.

Just wanted to bring this thread back to the top, so it'll get noticed more.

Keep on writin'!

Leebo,
Unfortunately my friend has forwarded me the information regarding the change in ownership and because of my physical state on that evening I cannot recall the name of the lounge. However I will contact my friend and will get that name to you! Do you know of any cigar shops and or bars in the VA Beach area?

HERFERS LOG: 29 Vega- Alpha 1

It’s been quite some time since my last log in. Time seems to move rather slow on this planet. In hind site I should have been placed here as an adult not a child, but our data was minimal, there was no way to know. Humans are time oriented creatures. Their obsession with this “rat race” seems to limit ones production . It took nearly 19 years to even begin to find traces of our people. The gathering has been troublesome, but I believe I have found the source. I will log in again tomorrow and ever day to follow, for I feel I am getting close to saving our beloved planet VUELTA ABAJO.

HERFERS LOG: 29 Vega-Alpha 2

Primitive to our standards of communication is this internet that I’ve reported on before. Yet it seems to be the most fluent way of communication on a mass scale available to me. I have found it to be the possible gateway I’ve been in search of. I’ve recently discovered sites where herfer types gather. They are called Cigar Family, Cigar Weekly, and Cigar Pass amongst several others. It is obvious that our genetics exist in many of these people, but I believe the purest of our people have found themselves together at this Cigar Pass. The gathering has increased many fold in the last couple weeks. I feel they sense it, but don’t understand. I will make an attempt to bond with them, in hopes that it will increase the abundance of leaf for our journey back home.

HEFERS LOG: 29 Vega- Alpha 3

My findings have been much better than even anticipated. Our saviors exist. They are full of knowledge and ambition. Their lives dedicated to the leaf. Some even have strong sources and surplus of our native leaf here. The leaf has been held captive on an island south of Miami by descendents from the evil planet CASTRO. They have developed a growing region in the Pinar del Rio with soil stolen from our home and they have named it accordingly. Access to this area and products has been minimal due to my placement, but the strongest of our people here at the “pass” have found the ways to re-live our history and taste what once was. I feel the time is on us and our people have gathered. Our war torn home will flourish once again as soon as we arrive. If only I can find a way to increase my supply of leaf.

HERFERS LOG: 29 Vega- Alpha 4

This is it. I have found the answer. One of ours, is unloading an over stock of leaf. The only way for me to obtain it is to become a MOOCH. Only the most highly regarded from our planet are ever considered mooches, but I’m up to the task. I can mooch with the best, I have too. With this shipment the universe will be forever full of the most luscious leaf and only the finest made gars for all to enjoy. These people are the answer. They are the chosen few. The herfers destiny is at their fingertips. I just have to get my hands on that leaf, I just have to. We will come home. I know it. “Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice.” “All hail CigarPass.” “The eagle will be landing soon.”

 My entry. Thankyou. :)
