Smart TV Recomendations

We have had a total of 4 Sony Bravia XR Series, including our now main 85” LED 4K Ultra HD Smart Google TV. There are many tech reasons that I went with these, but it boils down to, the picture is stunning. Watching sports is incredible. In football, you can see the individual blades of grass moving. With movies and such, you can see individual hairs and who has had acne in the past. And since you mentioned porn…💦🤣! Also, the reliability, in my opinion, is second to none. We had the two in our last house long after they had become obsolete, and only got rid of them because we were moving.

Are they more expensive? Yes. Are they worth it? Yes, every time (to me). For electronics, appliances, etc., I am of the opinion of “buy once, cry once”. (for tools that will be used semi-occasionally, I shop at Harbor Freight. Just so you know that I’m not some kind of snob!😂)

Of course this is just one man’s opinion, but that’s what you asked for! 😁

Any preference on Google TV - Fire Tv - ROKU ? And what is the difference of Direct LIT and Edge lit. Damn.... there's a bunch of shit to look at.

As a side note, Vizio was acquired by Walmart a few months back. Not stating this as any implication on quality. Just a note to be sure a buyer knows that Vizio of years past is no more.

We have only had Google, so I can’t really say which is better. On our TV, I can ask the remote “What hockey games are on tonight?”, and it will tell me, and switch to the channel I want. The others probably do something similar, I just don’t know.

There are three LED configs. Direct lit, Edge lit, and Full Array. I listed those in ascending order of picture quality, with FA being the best. All three of ours are FA, so again, I have nothing to compare to. There are also OLED screens, which are also high-end, but I’ve never looked at them so I don’t know…

The Bravia XR90 series (what we have) in a 55” is $1150 about anywhere you look.
 
I have some experience with a fire tv (purchased for dad about 2 years ago). It works as it should, but honestly I don’t care for how it works. It seems less than intuitive to me, and the response is slower than I would like. He uses it quite a bit, but mostly as a larger monitor for his computer (again my mistake here, hooking that up for him). It’s not really meant to be a computer monitor, yet my dad desperately wants it to act like one, which it does occasionally.

I have an element Roku tv that works quite well, despite being attached to an outer wall of my garage for the last 2 years with a canvas cover for protection. I’ve used it year round. It occasionally drops the internet connection but I think that’s more an issue with wifi getting to that area than anything else.
 
We have a few different smart TVs in the house. My personal favorite is the Samsung we have in the living room, it's a 75" 4K QLED purchased about 4 years ago and still running strong. Picture is really good, sound is good for every day watching, it "upscales" from HD to 4K (can't really see much of a difference on every day watching though). We have Insignia Fire TVs in the kids rooms. They both like them, and they do well with gaming (PS5 & Xbox Series S).

We also have a few Vizio smart TVs, that don't get used much. They are in the travel trailer, and work OK. Once they need to be replaced, they will be TCL smart TVs though.
 
Samsung, LG, or Sony for picture and build quality. My local lounge has ONN TVs that are budget and seem decent. They are probably on the same level as TCL.

To be honest, if this is your main TV, don't skimp. Stick with the big three. But if this is a secondary TV or garage/basement TV, a budget brand can make sense. That's my opinion.
 
So how important is the OS?

Like whats the difference in Tizen... Google TV.... WEB_OS... Fire TV? I'm not a gamer so does it make a difference which one I have?
 
The main difference in them all is the GUI, and how you navigate that is going to be personal preference. At the end of the day, they all do the same thing.

Would probably be best to stop at a Best Buy and play with each of them to see what works best for you. I personally like Fire TV over Roku and other options because my family likes the interface better.

I agree Jeff... but I'd rather get a little educated before I go in and start talking to the 20 year old tech nerd. It's easier to feel like a dumbass around family that know you are. So they all work to get a person to the same place. And since I'm used to fire tv. I might be more comfortable looking for that system is what I'm hearing. Or I'll be learning a new system. Stayed with my Daughter 2 weeks, at the end I was still trying to figure out the ROKU if she wasn't handy.
