Skunk!

Awesome. I love dogs.

This might help for removing the scent: http://kwc.org/mythbusters/2004/09/mythbusters_solar_death_ray_sk.html

I can add a little technical note here. Essence of skunk is what the gas companies use to make natural gas have the order it has. The reason is you can delute to 1 in 10,000,000 and it still has enough power to effect you olfactory nerves.

I did enjoy the story and feel for the dogs. I don't even want to imagine a mouth full of skunk gas. YUCK :0

I don't know what the chemical compound name is that makes skunk stink so bad is, but I know some natural gas processing companies (at least up here) will use H2S gas, or Hydrogen II Sulphide as an odorant for natural gas. It's called sour gas in the oil & gas industry and is a nasty NASTY product to encounter. It's heavier than air, soluble in almost all liquids, and is extremely explosive. It smells horribly like rotten eggs and is detectible by humans at a 2 PPB concentration (parts per billion) and most OH&S organizations set the warning level at 10 PPM. At around 50-100 PPM it'll kill your sense of smell, then knock you out cold.

(sorry for the techie threadjack :whistling: )

Back on topic:
About 3 days before my brother's wedding, he got shot at by a baby skunk caught in a raccoon trap left next to the house by the previous owner. Luckily the skunk was a baby and didn't have good aim yet, so he only got it on his right toes. I found a recipe back then (similar one found here) calling for a mix of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a deodorant soap. Worked really well for his situation, and gave my relatives some embarassing anecdotes for speeches at the wedding.

They actually use mercaptans to scent the natural gas. The mercaptans have the smell, but won't drop you. Also, H2S is explosive above 4% (40000ppm). You would be long dead by time thats explosive.

I drove over a skunk once coming back through the hill country and my car stunk for months! Good luck with getting the smell out of the pups.

Is there anyone else besides me that likes the smell? To me it smells like Marigolds (the Flower).... love that skunk smell!

(Nerd ON) Mercaptans (from what I see on Sigma Aldrich) all consist of primary thiol groups (-SH). I know these react really well with copper. Once the SH is stuck on the metal it shouldn't smell as bad, at least in experience with thiophenol. How you would cover a dog with copper (I) I don't know. It may also react with aldhydes and ketones well, again I don't know how to apply it. (Nerd OFF)
