Should we have a "Dog House?"

The concept sounds good, the execution will determine if it works.

I dunno. Sounds a little like the 'rating traders' idea that comes up from time to time. This forum works fine for me without having formal declaration of asshats, idjuts, and other undesirables.

But I do like the idea of a wait period to post. Give a newbie a little time to start to get it before something stoopid gets posted. One forum I liked had a minimum number of posts before you could start a thread. Made members contribute a little before they could try to grab the steering wheel. The exception was the 'introduce yourself' part of the forum.

I dislike the idea from personal experiance.

We have a "reviewing forum" at our forums that is the first and ONLY place new people can post until the staff decides to let them in. I was against this idea from the beginning, but being only a Moderator and not an Admin at our site my voice didn't count for much and it was implemented.

Since then the "n00bs" have to wait sometimes weeks to get let in and are harrased by the older members until they are.

This is no way to promote a family enviroment, asshats prove themselves to be asshats rather quickly. And once they are outed we all can put them on ignore and move on.

I would just like to think that in a 24 hour, read only *except for the intro thread* the newbies can read the PINNED posts about asking for cuban sources, searching before posting, etc.

I should cut down the "cello on/off?" posts that we see every other month.

You guys are raising some good points. And Wurm's post, especially, is giving me something to think about.

I think that while a "doghouse" may provide an information source, he's right in that it might start to cultivate an environment that is in contradiction to what the members would like. So the question might be rephrased as one of the protective ready access of targeted information versus the development of a particular board culture. It's a value judgement and not a purely rational call and that's why this subject merits a full discussion.

To KB's point, if there were more pinned threads which collect in a concise way the collective knowledge regarding cigars, humidors, lighting, aging, etc., then that would make it easier for new folks to learn in a more efficient manner. The search function is all well and good, but the information is still pretty diluted in these threads. So, in a way, we have to consider ways to make it easier for those who want to learn to get that first foothold into the various subjects in this art.

Hi Rod and Guys,

I'm new here, but the recent batch of bad threads strikes me as things the community, and especially the new guys like me, can learn from. I'm talking about the spurious "looking for Cubans" type threads among others.

What do you think about creating a forum to warehouse these bad threads and posters (I'd hesitate to call them members) so that we can see them all in one place? I think that the benefit of the approach would be to collect all the "asshats" in one place so that members can readily learn about all the way things can go wrong, all in one place.

The risk is that presenting these threads in such a concentrated dose might contribute to a skewed sense of what the place is really about.

What do you think?
