Scoring your golf game

I agree wih almost all of what you said. When I started playing my foursome typically used a mulligan per round and did not hit provisionals. As our game progressed we wanted to know if we were really getting better now all strokes count no mulligans, provisionals are mandatory on questionable tee shots (plus you get to take a practice swing). All putts outside 2-3 feet are conceded but, I will always putt them out anyway.

Only rule that I do not follow is if my ball is resting on a root or rock and I could damage my club or my wrist, I will move the ball on the same line usually within inches trying not to improve shot in anyway. My clubs are pricey and I usually re-sell so the condition of the club is critical ining to me to maintain value and I figure as long as the integrity of the shot is not compromised and my 4 some is ok with it I will not take a penalty. However, we always play competitive rounds and if they feel that I benefited from moving a ball I will take a stroke if they think a penalty is in order.

Bottomline, I attempt to play as close to the rules as possible without damaging myself or my equipment.

FYI my index is currently a 10.8 hope to get down to a 8 this season.

I've never really bothered to play by the rules but I do adjust my score (when I bothered to write it down) when I "cheat". Say for instance, my ball lands in the woods. If I know I've a greater chance of hitting a tree and having the ball ricochet back at me then I have of getting it out of the woods then I'll give myself a stroke penalty and toss it onto the fairway. If I think I might have a chance I'll give it a go. To me it's like a pick up game of Basketball. Sure there are rules and a score, but the goal is just to have a good time. There is usually four of us who play. I'm decent (thank you lessons), my one buddy is really good (he's been playing since he was 14), one is about the same as me, and one is piss poor awful. All of us have a good time though, because we don't take it serious and just have fun. I've never liked being paired with people who take the game deadly serious. It's a public golf course, have some fun man.
