Yeah I got this a few years back. Pretty wild huh? It's true, the human mind doesn't read each letter individually but rather the word as a whole. As lnog as the fsrit and lsat ltteer of the wrod is crecrot, msot ppleoe wlil be albe to raed the wrod no matetr waht oerdr all of the ohetr lrtetes are in.
 
I think it works because most of the words are pretty short.

The following should be just as easy to read, then, according to the "rules", also. Is it?

I was able to read both of them relatively easily.
 
Ah yes, monday morning distraction! I've seen this before, it's pretty cool....
 
This is really old and has been circulating for years. Also, I think the 55% thing is wrong and just a new addition. Far more than 55% can read the text. This is also the key to fluency in a new language - you have to be able to read the new language as words instead of letters (the compiling and translating) to get really fluent. Most Romantic languages are easier for English speakers because it is easier to get to this level when the alphabets are 99% similar, but getting to fluency in, say, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, etc is more difficult because you have to use the language enough and be comfotable enough to read by words rather than letters.

Also, spelling is still important, especially in English, becuase there are too many words that are similar, use the same letters, sound alike but are spelled different, etc. That's why English is one of only two Category 5 (as classified by Nato) in the world. Our non-phoenetic, maybe-sometimes use of grammar rules and shifting structure is not easy for the non-native speaker.
