Any of you boys have advice on which satellite radio service to go w/ XM or Sirius?

The wife is wanting to get me one for the car. We have satellite TV, so I don't really care if I have it in the house.

I know nothing other than local Charlotte radio completely sucks.

And if there a different place to post this, let me know....

I'm on the other end, Sirius. Commercial-free, baby!!!!!!

Make sure you have a referral when you sign up, no matter which you go with. They get a free month. If you go with Sirius, and need someone to use, hell, tell them that I sent you

No matter what you decide, you will be happy, though. I never listen to anything but the satellite radio now, and it is essential on my 6-hour trips back to Ohio...

XM, Opie and Anthony are great, if you like that type of humor. I don't have satelite radio, but I listen to XM through my PC.

Depends what you are looking for.

Sirius is much better for sports. Since it's for your wife I'm guessing thats not a huge concern. Other than that I think XM is better... At least until Howard Stern starts on Sirius.

I have XM.... like CC said, Nascar and college sports. The music selections are pretty similar though. My brother has Sirius and aside from sports, the other channels are pretty much the same. If you like Howard Stern, get Sirius, as he will be on there in the next year or so. I was really hoping XM would step up to him and pay the big bucks. They are going to have to do something when he goes on air with Sirius, I think.

Oh and as far as the units themself, no real difference between XM and Sirius hardware. Though, XM now has a walkman type unit.

At the moment XM is the larger of the two services but Sirius has been gaining ground since Howard announced he is moving there in Jan 2006. That being said, neither one is a money making business at this moment so you might want to look into who's footing the bills and what auto manufactures are going with what service for their new cars.

The one with the best survivability potential is what I would choose.

Keep an eye on Sirius' stock.... it's been climbing pretty steadily.

XM has Opie and Anthony which is a much better show than Stern, imho.

XMSR stock price is higher ;)

SIRI has had a larger percentage increase over the last year or so only because it fell alot faster and a lot harder than XMSR. SIRI got all the way down to $2/share and now it's back at $8 oooooooooWOW :0 meanwhile XMSR is over $37.00 ;) with today's "StockScouterRating" on MSN's site of a 10 on a scale of one to ten :0 (ten being the highest)

If one was lucky enough to catch the falling knife (SIRI) and not get your fingers cut off (if you bought it at $2/share) fan-freakin-tastic, good for you!! But the smart money's been on XMSR since the beginning. ;) At the moment, everyone's pointing at SIRI for their 300%+ price increase over the last year but again, I still think XMSR has a far better chance of long-term survival than SIRI. XMSR just came to an agreement with Toyota and it costs them far less on a per customer basis to add a subscriber than SIRI. XMSR has far more subscribers and if I were more of a stock geek than I am, there are other compelling arguments as well.

All that aside, your reason to choose one over the other may be driven by any number of reasons but if your primary reason is based on AVB's point:
The one with the best survivability potential is what I would choose.
then XM is the better choice. BUT if you absolutely, positively HAVE to listen to good ole Howard Stern then, first off God help you  and secondly, you'd want to go with SIRI :p

Oh just one more thing, for those of you who are impressed with SIRI's one-year chart ($2 to $8), take a look at a two year chart for XMSR ;) ($3 to $37)

Stock price at this point has little to do with surviability at this point. Look at subscriber gain over the last 12 months and how that is trending. Either service needs about 3-3.5 million to break even and right now XM has 2.5 million with S1rius at over 800 thousand. XM has deals with GM and Honda while Sirius has deals with Daimler-Chrysler and Ford. Toyota is walking the middle with deals from both services depending on the model.

Also in the works is the MyFy portable player from XM with the equivelent unit from Sirius about 4 months later. Both are involved in a joint venture to make a reciever which will get both services for release late in 2005.

There are some rumors that Apple and Sirius will join forces. If so, look for the announcement at CES in January.

From the short periods of time I've been able to listen to both it seems that Sirius plays a bit more esoteric bands and songs on some of their channels compared to XM. Of course, that could be because I didn't listen to all the channels too.

Lastly, Opie & Anthony aren't anything if they couldn't steal from Howard. High School kids against an NFL All Pro IMO.

IMO, $8 is pretty good right now. When Howard actually comes on the air or starts to market his airing, I think you'll see quick jump that will stabilize. XMs price jump has been because many auto manufacturers have opted for XM ready units in their vehicles. If they see an increase in Sirius subscriptions, I would have to think they will begin to switch. But, for me, even though the differences are small, I still prefer XM as my satellite music source, just wil buy Sirius on the market. LOL!

Excellent point  , SIRI certainlly has more upside potential than XMSR at this point. ;)

I guess that's why Howard fell behind them in ratings for NYC before they were fired.

I bought XMSR a few years ago for $3 something. Sold it last year for $24. :)
