I've got to replace the windows in my 60 yr old house. Anyone here done this before and have any advice and/or opinions?

Doc.

If you plan on staying in the home... don't go cheap. Replace the entire window, casing and all. In our old home I went cheap and while I don't care anymore and am glad to be rid of that house, I lost some money in the resale.

Go with a vinyl clad exterior. I'm assuming you have double hung windows? Depending on the style of your house there are many options. I did the window thing nine years ago and I'm sure there are tons of newer options out there. I would find a contractor that spealizes in windows as the job will go quicker with less mess and fuss. When I re-did the kitchen two years ago I changed the window opening and got a custom Andersen window that was vinyl clad on the outside and wood on the inside. It has divided light panes in side the two layers of glass.

You will save quite a bit of money on your heating bill as the new windows are great insulators with their double paned glass. Also they are a breeze to clean no more ladders, they tilt in.

Good luck with this Doc.

Spelt Andersen wrong!

Go with a Mac!

Oh...wrong forum.

-------> What they said!

Don't forget to insulate around the window.

Did our whole house 4 years ago. Went with vinyl clad replacements, and has been mentioned, replaced the entire window, and while I was having it done, had the exterior wood around the windows wrapped in vinyl as well. Now they are entirely maintenance free.

Went with a low e double paned glass filled with argon, I believe, and make sure you get the type that tilt in, makes cleaning them a whole lot easier. Wasn't a cheap remodel, but our electric consumption has dropped appreciably (electric heat pumps up/down for heating/cooling). Due to rising electricity prices, the bills haven't dropped all that much, but our kw hour usage is way lower with the new windows.

It's been awhile since I did the research, but I figured the payback would take 7-8 years, or so, back when I was looking into them.

Many good brands out there from which to choose, key is in the installation, as I think once you get to a certain level, there's not all that much difference between the major manufactures.

Good luck! Must admit, I don't miss seeing the curtains move when the wind's blowing!

Great responses AND acurate! Double pane, Vinyl, tilt-ins are the way to go as I've replaced the windows in several homes in the last 5-10 years with success. Be sure to insulate the opening when removing the old window and if you are replacing the old aluminium frames, be sure to know how to measure for the fins. New wooden facing/framing on the inside can make the window look top notch. PM me if you need more details.

I went with Long fence two years ago.
For What its worth I'd have them come out and give you the low down
Life time guarantee!!!!
We are happy but we ended up paying half of what they first quoted use for the same windows
I think they were called Quantum

You mean you're finally replacing these:

Ya dumb fuggin' flatlander, thats obviously not my house. Mine has plastic on the windows. It gets cold here.

Doc.

As a home improvement contractor my advice is make sure they are licenced and insured, ask for refereneces from jobs they have completed and call the better bussiness bureau and ask if any complaints have been listed. I dont woory to much about the name of the product just how the product is made. Tripple pane glass, welded corners, insulated, tilt in, locks ect...

When someone shoots out the windows in our house trailer, we just put plywood up, or plastic, depending on how many grits we get ground and sold that month. Hope this helps.
