Does anyone have this on their vehicle? My wife is wanting this for Christmas and I'm not sure. Has anyone had it installed after market and how has it done? I guess I don't mind walking out to the car in the mornings and starting mine, but she is another story. She is taking this "her car" thing too far, LOL.

Suggestions/Ideas?

:sign: After what she did when she saw yours, I'm scared :0

Ha, my wife wants one for Christmas as well. I did some research and the consensus was to have an authorized dealer do it as to not void any warranties (and for safety reasons). "Her" car (as she aptly puts it), is a new Forrester and Subaru JUST started doing authorized remote installs starting at 299.

What kind of car? And if it's new, check with your dealer. Good luck!

Oh yeah I have it on mine. I didn't have it installed, it was on it before I bought it but it was aftermarket. I love getting in a warm vehicle in the winter w/o having to go out and start it.

She will love it and you should get lucky because of it. :p

my parents have it on both of their cars, they love it. specially on those cold winter days. they have had zero problems (probably going to jinx them now). both are aftermarket (vipers i believe)

2005 Trailblazer. Hell the dealer wanted $900 to install a damn DVD player. I'm pretty cheap, so we just spent $200 on those portable players. I'll check around w/ a few installation places.

My wife wants in for her 2002 Focus. It is $400 installed by the dealer. Aftermarket unit may not work in certain cars due to the chips in the ignition key

Didn't think about that Mike. I'll have to check the dealership as well.

my wife had one installed on her new focus before she picked it up.

she swears that she will never have another car without one.

my mom drives a 2005 Maxima with the chip in the key, no probs there. Chevy/GMC may be a diff story.

Have one in each car- essential here in ALaska!!!!

Best thing is, when they were installed locally, each remote will start both vehicles. No problems at all with installation, and that was 3 years ago. And loving every morning, walking out of the station and getting in my nice, toasty truck. And I laugh at my firemen who have to go out, start their cars, and scrape their windows. A thing of the past for me!!!!!

get them- you won't be sorry. And in all the years I've been fighting fires, I can personally attest to onle ONE car fire being attributed to the remote start (result of bad installation by a friend)

It's not my first remote starter but I recent had a fancy schmancy remote starter installed in my new pick-em-up truck. It's the LCD display pager variety that works up to 3/4 mile away...confirms that it started...and can even be set to start every two hours.

Put simply, it's great. Wouldn't have a vehicle up here without one.

Edited to add:

And about it voiding your vehicle warranty: It's my understanding...and take that for what it's worth...that any dealer/car maker that says that is trying to hose you. I seem to remember reading some legal-type article that said if the modification causes a problem, it's obviously not covered by your warranty...but it doesn't void your warranty entirely. I bought a third-party warranty for my truck and they said go for it.

Bastards. You were suppose to talk me out of it, LOL.

Thanks for the info and advice guys, much appreciated.

This is some really good info.

I have always subscribed to the hardcore addage that extended idling is bad for a car.

Obviously the colder the climate, the more you're willing to sacrifice a little engine durability for convenience and health.

Swissy and those who live up in really cold temps, do you use special 0 weight oils to get the oil into the upper engine as quickly as possible? How about oil pan heaters or block heaters that plug in?

I am thinking about getting the oil pan heaters. So much engine damage (anywhere from 70-90%, depending on who you ask and how you drive) occurs on startup.

Build a garage and turn the 2nd floor "bonus" room into your smoking lounge.

In my opinion the DEI Brand of security/remote starts are the best their is for themoney. You can pick them up at your local best buy for like 488 installed.....just make sure u stick with viper its their best brand.

Just out of curiosity, has it ever been below zero in Maryland?

Well, I may have an "out" for you. Check with your local police department (or county) and see what their laws are for having a car running un-attened. In many counties is Wisconsin it carries a fine of like $100. The local news just ran a story where 4 or 5 people got tickets for warming up their cars in the Mall parking lot (I assume they had either left the car running and went in or started it from the mall and walked to the car).
