Decided I'm going to treat myself to a guitar, since I've wanted one for a long time. I've never played, so I'm needing a fairly priced one, that I can use for as long as it takes.

Any issues looking for a used one on craigslist?

Don't fugg around. The Princess should have the very best. Martin D-28. So what if you can't play it. It'll look nice in the corner of the living room and you won't have an inferior guitar to blame your ineptitude on.

Taylor.

If you know how to play a few chords, I would skip Craigslist. Give yourself an hour or so at a shop. Play everything within your price range. Something should call out to you.

Thanks guys.

Doc - I'm going to be the next big thing! This guitar won't be a clothes hanger, like the wifes treadmill was at one time :)

FWIW, Ovation makes some nice and affordable guitars. The one I have is quite beautiful and plays very nice. I just wish I knew how to play.

I need a guitar first, smartass.

You can hum the tune while the teacher plays...

Just get a used gibson or a new cheapone at the used store. Make sure the neck is in good shape and it can be tuned.

Actually...talk to the person you are going to get LESSSONS from...maybe they have an idea or know of cheap one for starters!

:p

<also...watch 'slickdeals.net' they sometimes list them>

Musicians Friend is another site to look.

My price range is between $100-$200, unfortunately.

For an acoustic? Well, just know you're not gona get a "lifelong" instrument out of it then. Go with a Yamaha acoustic in that range. Or step it up a little and go $300-$400. Get yourself a decent Ibanez.

Taylor is one of the Cadillacs of guitars, so you'll drop a pretty penny on them. Same with Martin. Great sound and construction, not really "beginner" guitars IMO.

Musicians Friend is good, but go to your local Guitar Center first and get to know the one that feels the best to you before you make your purchase. I've been playing since I was 11, did the band thing, recorded some stuff, then went through my "coffee shop" phase, and now I have a career. The man is always tryin' to keep us down!!

Good luck TB! If you need anything, PM me.

We got my son an Oscar Schmidt by Washburn. He loves it and it sounds pretty good. It's definitely in your price range and has been a pretty good starter for him. I play it quite a bit too and can totally rock out the first part of 'Smoke on the Water'.

Epiphones aren't too bad in that range. But I agree that it's hard to beat a Martin.

Agreed. I did that when I hadn't been playing long and ended up with a $400 full mahogany Alvarez that is still my favorite guitar today.

In the sub $200 range Craigslist is probably your best bet... maybe eBay. Unfortunately you get what you pay for.

Thanks Jon, appreciate the advice.

Kirk - LOL.
