Recommend me a Bolivar

I haven't gotten around to smoking my Gigantes yet... due to the fact I refuse to smoke a cigar with a sinus infection (I suffer from cronic sinus problems in the winter :( ). Nothing wastes a good cigar than having your head stuffed up and not being able to taste it.

I'm right there with ya, brother. I'm on my second sinus/head cold of the season and I'm pissed. Well, at least it's so cold this week that I couldn't smoke even if I wanted to.

Bolivar doesn't seem to be a brand that suits me. Having said that I have some aged Inmensas that are smoking right nicely now.

My 2 faves are the PC and BBF, but I'm told that the Corona Gigante is excellent with about 3 years age on them.

I love puzzling over how the different cigars in a brand can be stocked to deliver their pleasures over time. Without the means, space or patience to simply age "a box of everything," the challenge of stock selection is that much more stimulating.

I am just getting a feel for this aspect of the hobby. At first, I was buying with little forethought as to the end result. Now that I've seen what I could have done, I learned a bit and I am developing more strategy. I am trying to visualize what I want my aging stock to contain and, of course, how to compromise on my budget.

I want a mix of sizes and flavors with them coming of age so I have a good mix. It's a challenge mostly because of money! :D Luckily, I have plenty of help from the brotherhood. ;)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Gold Medals. Or are we trying to stick to cigars that are not impossible to find?

Wilkey,

I have become a real fan of Bolivar the BPC in particular... That said, the Royal Corona is probably my favorite of the brand. I just like the way it smokes, a very even draw from start to finish.

Hi Wilky

If you can find a late 05 or early 06 box of Royal coronas with box code POS you wont be disappointed.......These havent been this good in years and Im talking about the 1995 time frame......

Not impossible, but at a price of around $45 a stick I would say unreasonable, at least for my budget.

I've liked the RC from early '06, and I have been told they decline in terms of taste from that point onwards.

I hear good things about the Coronas Extra from '98.

The decline in flavor is quite right as 06 progressed.........Too bad........When these are at their best their unbeatable..........

Thanks for the responses, folks. I've found that I like to have BPCs on hand. The early 06 BRC are a revelation to me. Also, a box of BCG for those times when I can take a leisurely smoke. It's har dto go wrong with Bolivar.

Steve, how philosophical of you!

I think that is the one I smoked on a very empty stomach while in Scotland a few years ago. I could only smoke half of it as it made me feel like I was drunk. It was a shame to toss it but I had too. Definitely a fine smoke.

I'm the odd man out I guess. The BRC I have from Mar.06 are powerful and smooth but flavor wise..nothing to write home about. Which is the same thing I said about the BBF I have. Will have to see what time has in store for these.

Don't know if I want to give up the box, but I wouldn't mind getting some BPC. hint, hint
