Guys..a little help as I haven't smoked either. I want to buy my son a box of robustos as a welcome home from college gift next week.

I jumped on the Black Cat deal for the DPG Black 1979's and they're backordered till God knows when.....

Then I saw a deal this morning on the Tatuaje Series P , P2....

Looking for a solid medium smoke for him and want to give him a Pepin cigar. What do you guys think is a better stick to buy?

Thanks

I prefer the Black labeled DPG over any Tatuaje I've had other than the Cojuno 2006. I like the Tats alright, they just don't really fit my tastes like the DPG Blacks.

The P1 is a pretty tasty smoke that shouldnt take his head off, or punch him in the gut. The Havana Hermosos is also a very nice med smoke.

If he is pretty new to this, I would go with the Tat P's. They are the same blend as the Havana VI's, but I have found them to be milder than those. The one's I've smoked have been very good, the only issue I've had is that the ash is flaky and doesn't hold up well. However, taste is just fine with these.

IMO, the DPG Black is a vastly superior cigar when compared to the Tat P.

Doc.

FYI - the Series P is a mixed filler cigar.

I know T36...he's 20yo kid just starting out...going more for taste regardless of the 60/40 filler..although it's the same as the Havana VI line. You have a choice?

Okay, being that I am 20 years old...coming back from college....only been smoking for 2 years...I would have to toss my vote in for the Tat Ps. Nevermind taht they are a mixed cgiar, I have never ever had a problem w/ them burning weird on me or anything like that. I have had both of these cigars (and OWN both boxes you are speaking of) I have a box of the DPG Black Robos and Tat P3s. DPG black is my favorite smoke right now, but if he's not extremely developed...the P3 would be a good smoke to get him. He'll be able to taste that Pepin goodness, but one that is not too complex.

Either way, you are one hell of a cool dad for getting him a present, let alone a box of DPGs. I.Love.You. Can I come live w/ you?

Doc,
I would agree with you on this, but it sounds like he was asking which is a milder smoke for a newer cigar smoker. If offered both, I would pick the DPG black myself, but for a new smoker I would recommend the Tat P.

Sure Aaron, come on over...what's another mouth to feed....the Jersey Shore is great in the Summer, tons of hot chicks! But remember one thing, my humidor is always locked when you college guys are in town!

Your opinion was exactly what I was looking for and as Brent just said...I want more of a mellow smoke with a bit of a bite and not a major smoke with changing profiles. He loved the box of Short Stories I sent him back with but I want to get him a Pepin cigar. I guess I'm leaning towards the Series P now.

Thanks guys.

Not to confuse you even more... but I vote for the DPG Black. I had one when I was only a few months into smoking cigars and LOVED it. I always keep a bunch in the humi.

I love the Havana VI line (Nobles especially) and even though it's got the same kind of tobaccos as the P line... for some reason I really disliked the P3 I had. It tasted like air to me compared to even the Havana VI, and just doesn't even begin to compare to the DPG Black smokes to me.

...I can really tell you didn't want to confuse me flamchop! :whistling:...I want everyones honest opinion....wouldn't want it any other way.

So I call Black Cat to give it one more shot or I'll cancel and Shira down there says they just got a huge DPG Black shipment...but no robustos....but they got a 5X54 beli called the 1970 that I didn't know about...so I substituted that for the robustos for 4 bucks more for the box....problem solved. But now you all have me thinking about the Havana VIs.

Thanks guys.

BUY both. Can't go wrong with that. One for returning from college, and the other for getting good grades (or for just passing another year)! LOL! That is a pretty cool thing to do for your son. Whatever decision you make, I'm sure he'll be pleased.

I would go with the Tats on this one. I have a box of the DPG robos and they just havnt done it for me. The tats have always been nice. Getting a box of them today.

Yeah I did FC5....got a different size DPG Black (1970?) the Tats and a 20 pack of 601s for him....that should hold him for a while and keep him out of my humidor...plus I'll grab a few to try myself :p

Thanks for everyone's input on this, most appreciated.

I just got my first box of the Blacks and smoked one last night. I was underwhelmed....

Btw, as has been mentioned in another thread, the wrapper is very thin! I got the bands off OK but the wrapper got cut through(teeth I guess) a little bit at the head as I smoked it.

no comparison, the Pepin Black by a country mile... the Tat Ps I had also tasted like air to me, and tasted nothing like the Havana VI line
