Puffstuff J. Fuego Corojo #1 Taste Test

I was able to smoke both the PC and the Churchill this weekend and in my opinion both were VERY tastey cigars! I had no issues with the construction on either one, both burned almost perfectly, no touch-ups. I thought both of these were medium cigars that produced a lot of smoke! I kept thinking to myself that they kind of had that cuban taste to them, but I'm a newb in that department, so I could be wrong. Both were very plesant smokes and I would definitely purchase some! Thank you Puff for the opportunity to try these guys! :thumbs: :thumbs:

Btw- were they from the same brand/line?

Corona:

Good nutty flavors, with some leather. A slight touch of bitterness. Pretty straight forward the whole way through. The draw was good, the burn was perfect. I smoked this over the lunch hour. Perfect for the amount of time I had. About an hour. I would definitely go for more of these.

Churchill:

Straight tobacco, with a an edge of bitterness. Nothing else jumped out at me. I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as I did the corona. The draw was good, the burn was impeccable, but the taste was just not pleasing. Perhaps some time in the cooler would have done this baby right.

Out of these two, I would recommend the corona for a good short smoke.

Al, thanks for the opportunity, for the smokes, and for everything else you do for us here.

Here are my reviews:

Churchill

Pre-Light

Well constructed, firm, good cap with a coffee-n-cream colored wrapper with few veins. The pre-light draw was nice and firm but imparted little in the way of any noticeable (other than tobacco) taste; it appeard it was going to be a mellow smoke.

First Half

Initial flavors were mild tobacco, coffee and nuts with a slight woddy flavor. The burn was a bit uneven but hardly worth mentioning. The draw was perfect not too light but not too tight either. The smoke was thick and copious. The ash was salt and pepper in color and was able to hold for an inch or two before wanting to fall off. So far my thoughts that this was going to be a mellow smoke have been confirmed. Flavors did not change much from the first draw through the first half of the smoke.

Second Half

Now burning perfectly with a firm ash. Flavor has picked up a bit but not much. Still very melow with a nutty woody flavor. Not strong at all to me. Pretty much the same cigar and characteristics throughout.

Opinion

Construction = 8/10
Smoking Characteristics (burn, ash, volume of smoke) = 7/10
Flavor = 4/10
Overall = 6/10

Unfortunatetly I found that this cigar let me down. The construction and appearance of the cigar had given me high hopes. The aroma and pre-light draw was good as well. The smoking characteristics were good, the burn was consistent without any need to touch up, and the volume of smoke was very good. However in the flavor department it was lacking. Now the flavor was not bad at all and I want to make that very clear. It was just too mild and not very rich - something that I generally prefer in a cigar.

Corona

Much of the same for this little smoke so I will only hit the highlights.

The wrapper was smoother and darker with noticeably fewer veins. Construction was good and this smoked with an even burn and firm ash. The BIG difference was the flavor. This one, while no powerhouse, was much more flavorful than the churchill size. Were these even the same blend and just different sizes? Does not seem to be so to me.

Construction = 8.5/10
Smoking Characteristics (burn, ash, volume of smoke) = 8/10
Flavor = 7/10
Overall = 8/10

First, thanks Al for letting me participate and for your generousity.
I usually have difficulty identifying specific flavor characteristics unless they really just jump right out at me and none did with this smoke (the Churchill) so my review will be mostly about construction and my personal impressions. I took a few pictures but had trouble operating the wife's digital camera. If they come out, I'll post them at a later date.

This cigar measured 7 1/2" x 3/4" (48 ring?), stored for a week or so at 68 to 70 RH and temp.
It was a medium brown color, had a veiny wrapper and a triple cap. The body was firm, with no soft spots.
Once clipped (with a Xicar) it had a not too breathy draw...some resistance, and not at all plugged.
The burn started out a little uneven and stayed uniformly uneven throughout, but did not require any touch ups.
To my tates, this was a mild bodied smoke without any complexity to the blend. I found it rather flavorless.
The ash was light gray with darker streaks and had a "stratified" appearance (picture may follow). The ash never got "flakey"and held on for each third of the smoke.
Two minor breaks in the edge of the wrapper leaf occured, with the wrapper lifting slightly away from the body, but these burned through without any problems.
I prefered the aroma of this smoke more than the flavor, which I found rather one dimensional. The flavor and body picked up a bit in the last inch and a half, but not to any great extent.
The draw was fine throughout the smoke.

So...this cigar was well constructed but was too mild for my tastes.
It's something I might keep in my "moochador" (which doesn't contain any dog rockets, just decent stuff I'm not interested in smoking).
Looking forward to trying out the little guy this weekend. :thumbs:

I finally had a chance to try the Corona last night. Consistent tobacco / woody flavor. Not complex but very nice. I found it a medium bodied smoke. Good draw and ash. A cigar I would very much like to have more of for those days when I am in a lighter mood. I enjoyed it very much. Reminded me, a tiny bit, of a 46 ring H Uppman I had recently.

Thanks for the chance to review these.

When do we get to find out what they are?

Edit to add question

Well, here's my first cigar review. Thanks Al for the chance to review these cigars.
First is the Corona , prelight draw was good, not too tight. I picked up peppery notes, but not strong, more subtle. The burn was even and I did not have to make any correction to it. The flavor was consistent throughout the entire smoke, subtle pepper, leather or earthiness. I did not notice heavy smoke as others have commented. This was a mild cigar, nothing overpowering, just a mellow cigar.
All in all, I enjoyed smoking it but I do think a bit more time in the humidor would help improve it.

First off, thanks Al for the smokes and the opportunity to enjoy them and review them.

So I decided to let the two mysterious Puff & Stuff smokes rest for a bit before torching them. Today, after a nicely prepared and enjoyable Brunch, and with a fresh cup of my favorite Brazilian coffee, I decided now was a good time to review the Corona. Pictured below:

Puff_Stuff1.jpg

The wrapper was a reddish brown and certainly substantial with a bit of visible veining.

I clipped the cap and the pre-light aroma was of hay and a slight hint of coffee. After clipping a few small stems were visible in the filler.

Puff_Stuff2.jpg

It was a bit temperamental on the lighting and immediately tried to burn a bit uneven.

Puff_Stuff3.jpg

It didn't require a touch-up and although it burned a bit uneven through-out, it could have been because of the ceiling fan going full blast today. The first third was a ever so slightly harsh, especially if I didn't give it a good rest between draws. It drawed nicely through-out. Plenty of aroma and smoke through-out.

The ash was very firm, and a dark gray.

The center of the cigar was by far the best with a bit of variation in the intensity of the flavors. I detected a bit of more of the burnt coffee flavor and the grass or hay flavor was ever present.

As I finished, it was difficult not to taste more of the harshness. I'd have to say it was a medium smoke, and about a 2.5 on my scale of 1 to 5.

Thanks again Al, Churchhill review, to soon follow.

I smoked the corona this weekend and my results were pretty much identical to those I posted about the churchill (in post #24) except that the draw was a little tighter and this one had a smidgeon more body/flavor.
I regret not being able to rave about these gifts, but you asked for an honest opinion. But WTF do I know anyway?!
Thanks very much once again for the opportunity Al! I hope my review helps you.

Petite Corona
This was a well made cigar that was enjoyable from start to nubbed finish. Smoking time was around 50 minutes while I got my ass handed to me in poker. While not a very dynamic or complex smoke, it was a great little smoke all the same. I would probably buy some depending on the price.

Churchill
Tasted the same as the smaller pc. Again not much flavor change but still a good taste all the same. This stick didn't burn nearly as well as the pc though. Again, I might buy some depending on the cost.

Thanks Al

Thanks for letting us know what they are. Do you have any of the PCs and what are they going for?

Seth

Thanks again, Al. I really appreciate the chance to try these out. This is my first review, so keep that in mind when reading.

First, I started with the petite corona. I looked this cigar over closely, and thought it looked like it was well put together. There were no major veins, the wrapper looked a beautiful deep brown and had a nice shine/oil to it. The cap looked quite nice. Smelled great.

I cut the cigar, and found a stem. Oh, well. It had a very light draw. Perfect for me. Tasted quite pleasant.

I toasted and got this baby burning. Very nice aroma to the smoke. Burn was consistant all the way, with only a few touch ups. Very nice construction.

The flavor was hard for me to explain. I am going to say miild to medium, with a consistant flavor of nuts, cocoa..... One dimensional but very pleasant. It smoked great and had a nice consistant flavor that I enjoyed.

Second, the big ol' double corona. Again, very nice construction. Looked great. Clipped the cap and had a beautiful cigar. Draw was a bit tighther, but still great for smoking. It loosened up a bit after smoking a few minutes. This cigar had some nice thick smoke. Again, a very nice medium flavor that seemed to pick up the last half of the stick. It had gotten a bit spicier. Took me an hour fifteen to finish this baby!!

I thought these were nice cigars, Al. They had a pleasant flavor and smoked like champs. I would enjoy burning a couple of these again.

Review #2 coming soon, I am finally almost all caught up
