PSA Warning re: Diplomatic Cohibas, Pre-Release ELs, Unbanded behikes

It seems these are two separate issues. Spivy is giving advice to a guy (Ryan/Eagle32) who has some of the mentioned cigars but didn't get them from this TL guy. I'll leave it to the experts to determine the authenticity of these HTF cigars, but with every sale, the HTF part holds less and less water.

Ed is irrelevant to the point at hand. We should be more doncerned about these showing up in passes and trades

Ahhhh! Moderated forums. Sigh.

Close your eyes, click your heels three times and pretend this never happened.

Agree. Fools and their money will be parted; when it starts to affect the trading pool it gets lots more important to the community........

I received one of those Diplomatic Cohibas (siglo VI) from Ryan in a regular buy from him. Not sure if he got it from TL or from his other friend. The Cohiba band looks legit when compared to other Cohibas I've gotten from members here. The palm tree band I can't compare to as I've only seen it in the thread photos.

I decided to light it up in lieu of what is happening and do my own taste test. Mind you, I cannot taste little complexities like other members, basically just "meh, good, really good or dayum!"

It burned straight, ash was as firm as those pics TL posts, mottled grey and black ash, easy enough draw. I paired it with water to keep my mind focused on the cigar. What got me was I picked up a minty flavor throughout, some fairly good tobacco, but not that familiar taste I get from Cohiba's. I tried to like it, even so far as going halfway, but I had to put it down at the halfway mark.

I took knife to the cigar and slit it lengthwise to see what it had inside. It had all long fillers, no stems, and no hairs, threads, or any foreign objects. Looks like a premium cigar on the inside.

I don't have any more of these nor have I bought any of those palm tree Cohibas from TL. I did buy some Boli 5th Avenidas from TL, and some Cohiba maduros, but have yet to light any of those up so I will try my luck with them in the near future.

This is just my newbie view on what I smoked, this has nothing to do with how I do business with TL or Ryan.

If one of you more experienced members want to compare your own Boli 5th Avenida or Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios to what I bought, and do a side by side let me know, I'll send it to you. I think this will help everyone involved.

Dave

mmm, minty. I know this is the flavor I hope for when I smoke a Cohiba.

The problem is these are unlikely traditional fakes in the sense that they are total crap. The question is more are they what they purport to be. For example, if I buy a couple boxes of CoLas and reband with a palm tree, then sell it as diplomatic for 6 or 7x as much, cutting it up won't do any good. I am looking for one of the dip lanceros from TL's supply to do an investiagtion, given the direction this is heading may involve some decision making shortly. My guess is that the bolis and normal cohibas would be much more likely to be real, either by design or circumstance (could be legit because the guy is legit, or could be a bait and switch to get people comfortable for these 50-100$ smokes showing up now). Regardless, if you have a bunch of the boli re and want some inspection, I will sample one and see. I am not familiar with the cohiba maduros really at all so I couldn't help there. If you only got a couple it is probably irrelevant to the larger problem and my advice would be to smoke them but don't trade them regardless.

Phil, PM me your addy and I'll send a Boli over for dissection or sampling.

i was amazed that this "diplomatic" second band was even on a Siglo VI size as I don't remember anyone having that size to sell. Sorry, i don't have those Palm Tree lancero formats as they seemed to good to be true for the price and I can say I've learned much from being involved here to watch what I buy.

I buy to smoke and gift away, but I would not want to ever gift a fake cc to any of my friends. Nor do I want to ever get any of these put in a pass.

Has there ever been any reliable confirmation of legitimate "diplomatic" cigars bearing the palm trees? Until about a year ago, all diplomatic Cohibas that I've seen bore no palm tree band. A good friend of mine was a recipient of one of these diplomatic cigar boxes. It had a fancy box and the cigars came with a second band that was a simple red, white, and blue band bearing his name. He handed the cigars out at a luncheon and they were very good. He was told by the manager of El Laquito that they were carefully selected from regular Cohiba Muduro Genios batches, but were not of a different blend. Best of the best, but same blend.

I have seen the palm trees through legitimate distributors of Habanos S.A.
I too will be doing a side-by-side comparison. I will be dissecting whatever I don't smoke.
