A lot of people have written about an ultimate AI starting out just like this. No joke. Although, if you are to believe fiction writers then we would all be bowing to big brother now, wouldn't we?
Do you read "Dilbert?" There was a hilarious story line recently about his company's spam filter becoming self-aware, taking over, and ordering them to build an army of killer robots. Priceless. :laugh:
