Pope calls for lifting of US embargo on Cuba

My answer to Mags is this:

No, they cannot keep up with the demand, at least they can't unless they lower the quality. So I think it will cause a mixture of the two scenarios. The price will go up as the demand goes up (not to mention the extra taxes from the US :angry2: ). And at the same time, the Cuban government will try to meat the demand. That will lower the quality across the board. It will take a few years for it to level out. I firmly believe that those who really want the cuban cigars, are already smoking them, for the most part. The new demand will primarily be caused by curiosity and will dwindle in time.

This is JMHO but I would argue that I am spot on.

The year is 2028

NEWS FLASH-- Fidel Castro has died. Having lived past 100 years Castro passed away this morning in Havana. Castro had been ill for most of the past 25 years and his passing was not unexpected. In a statement from the White House President William Jenkins states that he will lift the embargo against Cuba. "Cigar smokers across America can expect legal Cuban cigars very soon" said the President.
President Jenkins will lift the embargo as one of his last acts in office after his humiliating defeat to President elect Chelsea Clinton in last Novembers election .  :sign:

Bill

edit for typo

No More BILL, No More BILL!!! Yeah, dats right, I voted for Chelsea, she's HOT, and so is her daughter :p

But I voted for you too CC, I did, really

You question the date but not President Jenkins? :D
WILLIAM JENKINS for PRESIDENT !!

Bill

Many people thought Clinton was going to lift the embargo during his last year in office. It never happened. Then people thought Bush was going to lift it during his first year. Never happened. I think it will be lifted once Castro kicks the bucket, which who knows when that'll be.

If they do lift it, I think the quality of cigars will go down. How much? We'll have to wait and see. But I think we'll have another cigar boom, this time for cubans...

The President does not have the authority to lift the embargo, Congress has the say in it. Even though Kennedy set up the embargo with a Presidential Order, Congress passed a bill making the embargo law. Congress will need to pass a bill to repeal the law.

And they way it's looking, Congress has no interest in doing this. And before the lefties blame the "Republican" Congress, the Democrats controlled Congress from 1958 to 1994 during which time there were no serious attempts to repeal this.

I did speak to my Congressman about this last year and he told me that there are not enough votes in Congress to lift this. This is not a partisian issue, a majority of Democrats and Republicans don't want to change this, at least not while Castro is alive and he continues to hate the United States the way he does.

As far as this:
I don't mean to bring up the 800 ib. elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring, but I'm curious here-does anyone here agree with the embargo to such an extent that they refuse to smoke or even possess ISOMs?
How many people in Nebraska on those nice long, straight, flat, desolate highways obeyed the 55 mph speed limit when we had that back in the 1970's up until such time that it was lifted? I mean after all, we needed to "conserve energy" and "save lives" ??? :whistling: and what ever other good things resulted from such a wonderful idea.

You're using one illegality to justify another? Minus 5 points and replay the example.

I REALLY hate to do this, but I think I need to agree with PB on this one. (Man did that ever smart just a little there.)

Cuba would almost certainly try to produce more to meet the extra demand and take maximum advantage of the rising prices. This rise in production would kill quality. Anyone who doubts this just look at the quality durring the cigar boom for non cubans in the 90's or for Cubans as well when they made there big push a few years ago. I actually had a seller give me a free EL for ordering Siglo 4's instead of 3's because so much of the siglo 3's at the time had plugging problems then and they didn't want to have to deal with a petential oversees return issue if I did get a box of plugged 3's.

Making cigars is an art and the good rollers that do it don't want to work nights so it's the newly hired that goes on the night shift. The president Altildis I think it is was saying how the quality of day shift compared to evening shift was just extreme. At the end of the boom they had more Montecristo returns then sales sometimes. Very poor quality.

Even then though prices will go up again as they did durring the boom. Its just economics.

There are some factors that may help though. First the experience of the boom may help lesson the effects of another. Second, many quality manufacurers may move back to Cuba again and bring that comitment to quality with them. A dedication to sell the cigars for all they can, but only make as many as they can while maintaining high quality standards. Making as much money as they can without sacraficeing quality. Some manufacurers are very commited to this particularly after the lessons of the boom. That same president of altildis mentioned what a huge mistake they made durring the boom. How they had such a golden oportunity to add so many long time life long cigar smokers as customers becasue of the boom, but that the short sighted sale of those plugged evening shift Montecristos ruined the experience for so many new cigar smokers and probably lost them forever as a life long customer.

Perhaps those views will help lesson the effects, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

In the mean time though, if you like Cubans make sure you stock up ahead of time. Things will shake out in the end. The newness will were of with time, and people will not put up with lower quality at higher prices for long. It will happen for a while though.

This Cuban American says lift the fricken thing. 40 years and it hasn't worked, um, time for something else. I am definitely in the minority. Just my opinion.

By the way, everyone knows they haven't lifted the embargo and gotten rid of Castro because then he would tell everyone who killed Kennedy.

Why would they need to tell anyone? Doesn't everyone know that Joe, John, and his idiot bother Bobby all got him killed by getting in bed with Joe's gangster buddies and then sicking the idiot brother on the mafia once they were in? Like who didn't know that the mafia would get so pissy and get even after being so hosed like that? If only the mafia would have suceeded in killing Castro so they would be too busy setting up house in Cuba to care what Bobby was up to.

Then Micheal could have gone compleatly legit in Havanna...... Oh wait, wrong movie......
