Supposed to be a hot one today with a heat advisory of 105F, possibly hotter, however it’s not so bad early this morning at 76F. Humidity is crazy high at 83% though, air feels muggy. I went digging in my gifted sticks drawer and picked out a Padron 2000 natural received 6/16/2008 from Mark (Local669), who I haven’t seen in a while. Hope you’re doing well buddy!
After removing the cellophane, I see it has started to turn yellow from sitting a couple years, may be older as I’m not sure how long Mark had it prior to my receiving it. I hold the cigar under the nose and find a strong smell of coffee with what seems like a hint of cinnamon. The wrapper is a chocolate brown with a bit of orange tint to it, looks really rough having a coarse feel to it, and a couple of prominent veins running the length. It’s very firm when squeezed, has a good weight in the hand, and after punching the cap I find the draw perfect with a slightly sweet taste of raisin and cinnamon coming through.
The foot lights easily, and after a couple quick puffs I take a long, slow draw. Perfect mild to almost medium spice hits the back of the tongue and throat, the smoke medium to almost full with the body somewhat light. Flavors are rich with taste of coffee, cocoa, wood, and a hint of cinnamon spice. The finish is smooth on the palate and lasting.
Through the first half, the burn is sharp with a medium to dark gray ash forming that seems a bit loose, but holds until tapped off in the ashtray. Tons of smoke was produced and continued to be a medium to full strength, flowing well through the perfect draw with spice hitting the tongue and throat just right. The flavors transition to more of a straightforward tobacco taste with only hints of the coffee and cocoa coming through, still delicious with the finish semi-lasting on the palate.
The balance of the cigar was consistent with sharp burn, perfect draw, and delicious straightforward tobacco flavor that left a semi-lasting finish on the palate. While I thoroughly enjoyed the natural wrapper on this 2000, I think the maduro gives it a little more richness that suits my palate more. Still, this was a very solid cigar that made for an excellent smoke this morning.
