Padilla Signature 1932 Oscuro Limitado
Robusto: Length 5 Ring Gauge 50
Five year old Cuban Corojo Nicaraguan wrapper with Nicaraguan Criollo binder and filler
Pepin baby!!
I got in on a buy of some Padillas several days ago (thanks Chris!) and couldn’t go any longer without trying one of them. I decided on the Robusto as it was the smallest of the three.
I pulled the stick from it’s wrapper and immediately noticed there was an actual stickiness to it. It had a slight sponginess, not too hard and not too soft. The oscuro wrapper had a very dark but shiny sheen, and nosing the cigar I came away with a dark, earthy smell.
I grabbed my Swiss Army punch and began operating on the head, rotating back and forth while pushing slightly in. I could hear the popping of the tobacco as the rounded blade cut through. The punch came a way with a perfect cut.
The pre-light draw was again of earth and dark flavors. Wood and of course spiciness as with most Pepins. However, did I detect a hint of fruit in there? The draw? Impeccable.
I toasted the foot with my trusty torch lighter and once blackened, proceeded on to lighting. Plumes of bluish white smoke abounded and a heavy spiciness immediately hit my palate and nostrils with a hint of woodiness. and again a faint hint of fruit? A few more draws and this cigar settled in to what it would be the entire way through: Earth, wood, leather, spice, amongst other dark, delicious, rich flavors. The spiciness subsided to a perfect level and everything about it became smooth, almost creamy?
Unfortunately, there was a bath time emergency (daughter got water in one of her ears, which has tubes), and I didn’t get to nub it. However, I did get to roughly an inch or so from finishing and although there was some intensifying of all the same flavors, it was still smooth with the spiciness at a perfect level.
I have to say that this cigar was worth every penny and highly recommend it!
