One year Anniversary/ 1000 Post Contest

I think this is my best review so far. It is still lacking in the taste department, but I hope that as I keep smoking I will be able to find more subtle flavors. Thanks for the contest.

Pre Light - First off I was scared. From everything that I have heard about these cigars, I was sure that it was going to be a full blown experience that was going to reduce me to a smoldering pile of rubble. It has a beautiful medium dark brown wrapper with a few veins, and a spot in the center of the stick where a triangle shaped section was coming unwrapped. I am willing to write this off as a fluke and caused in transit to me here in Iraq. The Tat smelled super, and I took more than one huge whiff. The cut went fine; pre-light draw was super and tasted of leather and tobacco. I toasted the foot, took my first pull and then this little beauty toasted me.

First Third – The volume of smoke was outstanding, slow drags produced clouds of thick tasty smoke. I am not good with finding flavors but I was greeted with some nice full on spice that faded and left the leather taste lingering on my lips and tongue. The ash held for about an inch, it would have made it longer but it was windy.

Second Third – I know I am in trouble, I know this feeling, and it is LOVE. So far the burn is super, and only had one small touch up, but again that was because of the wind. Smoke is still pouring out, it makes my eyes water, or is it tears of joy? It burns past the bad wrap with just a little trouble, but corrects itself. It is still spicy and “flowery” ???, with the leather after taste becoming a bit more pronounced.

Finish – I have decided if I am going to take this to the nub, I am going to have to slow down. The Nic Kick is starting to get to me. As I close in to the finish it also starts to burn a bit hot. The spice has dropped off some, and a raw tobacco flavor comes in to compliment the leather after taste. I take it all the way to the nub, and have a burnt finger to show for it.

Pairing – I paired this smoke with some good company and great conversation about my wild misspent youth with some coworkers. This has been a super smoke and a great experience for me. As a novice I can say that this is not for the Faint of Heart, but non-the-less a must try.

Final Thought – My Soul for a Box

* tried something new withthe photos, I hope it works......
Hey Tim, I'm glad the smokes found you well. Most of all............I'm glad you enjoyed that Noella. They are one of my favorite Tatuaje, if not my favorite. Nice review! I really liked the slideshow.

Cross posted for Marc's contest! Thanks again bro and congrats!

Double D and I went 50/50 on a CI special a year or so a go that included two Mazos of Gurkha Legends and a 12 pack of Nepalese Warriors. I reviewed the Legends a while back and to honor Marc's contest I decided to revisit the GNW today.

Sunshine in Germany? NO WAY! :0 Well I might as well take advantage of it and drink a cold beer too!

bild1034zl3.jpg

Nice box pressed shape, silky smooth reddish-brown wrapper and... hardly any smell at all, uh-oh.

bild1044su6.jpg

My smoking companion was not impressed.

bild1036ve1.jpg

At least the beer tastes as good as it looks!

And away we go! I lit the GNW and it was as I feared, hardly any taste at all. A few hints of spice from the Cameroon wrapper but that was it. And it stayed that way for over the first two inches.

1000548dw2.jpg

The burn was uneven due to the thick wrapper and the ash was an ugly dark and light grey swirl, it was also very loose and flaky and fell off at the slightest provocation.

bild1043kt5.jpg

And she stayed unimpressed, and this speaks volumes about this cigar, as I've mentioned in prior reviews, normally my cat is all over me whenever I light up a good cigar. With the GNW she looked up, yawned and went back to sleep.

bild1045mp1.jpg

I also decided I had enough. When a cigar gets bitter I'll try to work on it by either purging or letting it sit and calm down a bit. But when a cigar gets boring, there is no hope for it and it goes into the big ashtray in the sky.

Thanks for the contest Marc, it was fun!

Shawn

P.S. A few others of my 6er were better than the one I reviewed, but not by much. I will not be buying them again.

Wurm, though your cigar may have sucked, your photos were visually stimulating.

Cigar: Don Kiki Green Label
Size: 6x48
Wrapper: Brazilian Shade Grown Claro
Filler: Nic. Sun Grown from Cuban-seed Habano
Binder: Nic. Sun Grown from Cuban-seed Habano
Cost: $1.50 from Cuban Crafters
Age: 3+ years

Purpose of this Review: I promised a fellow BOTL that I’d try another one of these before bashing them again. He’s a fan; I am not.

From the Cuban Crafter’s web site: “…hand made in small batches and in limited quantities... Don Kiki personally blended the tobacco leaves in each cigar to produce an exquisitely mild taste... aged for at least three years before being masterfully hand made into meticulous cigars… then aged for another three years in Tabacalera Esteli’s temperature and humidity controlled aging room before being hand packed…”

I bought a 10-pack of these about 3 years ago when I started smoking cigars. Hell, I didn’t know any better and they came bundled with a 30-count humi for about $35. I smoked a few early on, but quickly learned that they were not for me. Anyway, I had 3 left in the bottom of my current (read “larger”) desktop humi, so I pulled one to meet my obligation.

This is not bad-looking stick but is a few shades lighter than what I prefer:

edf.jpg

The pre-light smell of the cigar was very light, almost non-existent. The taste of cigar wrapper was slightly bitter and reminded me of cardboard. I had to keep reminding myself to remain open minded, but it was difficult since I’ve had such a negative opinion of these for so long.

I punched the head of the cigar and found the wrapper to be somewhat fragile. It did not crack, but I had to take it slow to keep it intact. My initial pre-light draw revealed a mild nut-like flavor and an overly easy draw.

The cigar lit very well and provided plenty of smoke. My initial few puffs revealed a very mild, earthy flavor reminiscent of the Fuente Flor Fina. The aftertaste, while not unpleasant seemed somewhat oily. There was no harshness, which is something I distinctly recall from my first experiences with this cigar. Perhaps the additional 3 years of age have helped in that regard.

The cigar kicked it up a notch at the one-third point as the flavor changed for the better. It also went from being a very mild stick to almost-medium in strength. Unfortunately, the fragile wrapper took the positive change in flavor as an opportunity to explode.

069.jpg

The cigar burned like a champ, with razor sharp edges. No touch ups were needed. The ash was a pleasing light gray and fell off at the 2 inch point, just after the picture above was taken.

Overall, this was not a terrible stick, but it wasn’t good either. I can see why some might select it as an inexpensive, mild smoke. If mild is your thing, and you like to keep things inexpensive, you could do worse than these. Personally, I prefer cigars on the opposite end of the spectrum. I love the spice, flavor and kick of an LFD, Pepin or OpusX and this cigar lacked all of that.

I put this cigar down soon after this pic:

Then I pulled something from the humi that is a little more to my liking:

I’ve sent the last 2 DK Greens in my humi to the BOTL I wrote this for and I hope he enjoys them. As for me, I'm gonna sit back and enjoy this Gurkha Doble Maduro... Ahhhh!

Nice review Steve!

Never bought/smoked a Don Kiki, the name has always made me go "WTF" and is/was a big turn off.

I bet that Gurkha tastes better than the one I smoked lol

Wow, this really picked up some steam in the home stretch. There are a lot of great reviews to choose from, and this has been a super read.
Thanks for the super contest, I can not wait to see who the winners are.

Cigar: Bolivar Tubos No.3
Origin: Cuba
Vitola: Placeras
Size: 4 7/8 X 34
Age: Unknown… This cigar was purchased at the JW Marriott gift shop in Caracas, Venezuela on June 23rd 2007.

This cigar was a gift given to me by my better half. She cracked the seal on the tube to remove the cigar and the label from it before traveling back to the states. It’s been kept in the humi at 68%, 68-70 degrees for the last month or so in the original tube with the cap off.

PRE-SMOKE IDEAS
I’m not really sure what to expect from this Habanos. For starters, I’m not sure my palate has become quite developed enough to do this review much justice. The only other ISOM I have had the opportunity to experience has been the Siglo III and I’ve never smoked a Bolivar, ISOM or non-ISOM. Other reviews that I have read on this cigar have varied considerably. Some say it’s a “not very well known treasure”, others wonder why they even stuck it out and finished it. I’m staying on the optimistic side…

PAIRING…
Several reviews of this cigar have recommended a strong coffee to go along with it. I just happen to have a bag of Anzoategui, Venezuelan café that I think will go nicely with it. This coffee is dark and strong… period!

PRE-LIGHT
Since this cigar is pretty small, I kind of just shaved off the cap with one slow clip. It was a pretty clean cut. My first impression of the pre-light draw was that this cigar was rolled pretty tight. Either that or it’s a bit over humidified for its size. There was also a rich tobacco flavor delivering on my palate. This cigar appears to be well constructed with a rich, light brown colored wrapper. There were a few scrapes here and there, most likely from more recent international travel.

LIGHT AND FIRST THIRD
When I torched up this cigar I was expecting bold and rich flavors. I got the opposite, mild with moderate spice and a tight draw. Not much smoke right off the bat. I went ahead and took the label off to reveal some peeling on the wrapper. After a couple of puffs the cigar was on its way. The lack of adequate smoke prompted me to clip off a little bit more of the cap. This was to little avail, as the draw was still too tight for my liking. The flavors were still pretty simple, tobacco and spice. I noticed right off the bat that the aroma was extremely pleasant. At one point I even stood up to get a little more of the drifting smoke. The aroma was sweet and creamy, much to my liking. This didn’t compensate for the lack of rich smoke though. I started to question my optimism…

I’m also thinking that I don’t really prefer this small of a sized cigar. It feels more like I’m smoking something that Snoop Dog rolled rather than Cuba’s finest tobacco.

SECOND THIRD
This cigar is trying like hell to open up. I’m getting more smoke by now, but still a pretty mild flavor. I have started to taste some creaminess and also something I tend to regard as a floral quality. Also a bit of nuttiness at times. Still really enjoying the aroma on this smoke… really it’s wonderful. But that doesn’t make up for the lack of flavor and cigar flesh that I’m really missing…

An exhale through the nostrils is full of that floral quality and a bit of zing…

The coffee that I was hoping to enjoy along with this smoke seemed a bit overwhelming. I would have been better off with a bottle of Ozarka. I let my cup go cold…

I’m having to double puff on this thing to get enough smoke to really taste this cigar’s profile. I’m giving in to the fact that this Bolivar is just going to be a mild smoke with simple flavors. There were moments of creamy smoke and tobacco notes… but that was about all she had to offer.

Here is one of me working on that tight draw. Can you see the sweat beads forming from the strain?

f_KettyResizem_a6be7b1.jpg

My girlfriend caught wind of that wonderful aroma I described and wanted in on the action. No complaints here!

FINAL THIRD
Well… lots of what I already wrote about. The flavors on this smoke never really changed or progressed. By this time I have declared an all out war on the insects that have gravitated toward my front porch. My fan died right before this endeavor started which really made the air a bit stag. Here in N. Texas you had better have some cool air blowing in your direction or you’re sweating your balls off at 11:00pm at night. Damn… I can’t wait for the fall!

This little cigar actually finished relatively well. I imagined this smoke was going to get harsh and hot on me. That wasn’t the case and instead she stayed pretty steady all the way down to the nub. And as the pictures indicate… there were no burn issues at all. Only draw issues!

f_Pic4Resizedm_fa39736.jpg

As I tossed the nub I caught my last whiff of that nice aroma. Too bad that was the best part of this smoke. I also noticed that I was a little light in the head with that nicotine pit in my stomach. WOW! This little “Snoop Dog vitola” packed a punch.

Total smoke time was less than an hour. Well, I considered this one of the better smokes in my little desktop humidor. I was a bit disappointed as I have come to regard Cuban tobacco as something to really look forward to. Maybe my expectations are a little high… huh?

One thing is for sure… I look forward to trying a bigger, more full bodied Bolivar in the future. I’ve yet to taste that signature Bolivar flavor that I hear so much about. In good time I guess… :whistling:

Thanks for opportunity to share this review. It was fun! And thanks so much to Marc for his generosity in offering up this contest.

The contest is at an end.

I’m changing the rules. No poll. Not enough time on my end and I thought I’d have a larger number of entries.

I thank those of you who submitted a review. They were wonderful. I will post a winner soon.

Such great reviews to chose from. I'm having trouble deciding the winner.

This was ridiculous to judge. Way too many good reviews to chose from. Each one was good and several are so close in my mind that I can’t really separate them into first and second and third place. I really need more prize packs if I do this again.
