Congrats on a year and fun contest! This is one I can participate in. :)

Congratulations, Marc! I'm honored to consider you a colleague and friend, CigarPass is that much better for having you here.

Best,
Wilkey

This contest is unfair. It gives people who suffer from gustatory hallucinations an unfair advantage. Those of us who are grounded in reality are at a distinct disadvantage.

I was in the middle of finishing up a review for Saxjazzman's 'bundle challenge' and made sure it was ok with Marc before I posted it here as well. Congratulations to Marc for his time here and thanks for the contest!

My review:

Thank you again to SJM for providing the goods and allowing me to do this…I did learn something in this journey…that how well a cigar is rolled and how long it has been aging makes a drastic impact on flavor-even within the same brand. Don’t judge a cigar having had only one.

I smoked my lot of 3 cigars. The first 2 were ok. I decided to do my review on the 3rd cigar and something happened…it was much better than the first two. So, for the purposes of allowing everyone else to make better informed decisions, I will annotate the differences within this review. Scoring was done according to SJM's request. Rating of 5-10, 5 being awful, 10 being great, in 3 categories with the overall score of A+B+1.5 x C divided by 3.5

Rocky Patel Factory Selects (a 2nd of the RP Sungrown)
Size: 5.50 x 50
Wrapper: 5-Year aged Ecuadorian Sun-Grown Rosado Natural
Binder: NIC
Filler: 7-year aged NIC/DR
MSRP: 20 cigars in a bundle for $77.20
Price Payed: $46.95
Stated Strength: Full
Comments: This is supposed to be RP Sungrowns that did not make the cut to get boxed. They did not make the cut for supposedly cosmetic reasons. Claimed to have the same QC as all of RP cigars. These cigars have been aging for about 6 months.

I smoked this gem at midnight by tiki torch and starlight with a light breeze to soften the warm night, and a sky that was streaked with clouds that reminded me of the Pirates ride at Disney. My drink was room temp distilled water to keep my palate honest.

A. Appearance: 8.75
The pre light aroma is very mild with awesome earthiness. I can’t stop smelling it! It is great! The wrapper looks enticing-though it has some veins, it looks silky and mildly oily. (The first 2 were not oily) The roll and cap are not perfect, overall it’s nice, but is worthy of the title ‘2nd’. The pre light draw is on the tight side with a mild/earthy and spicy taste. (In contrast, the first 2 were a loose draw)

B. Taste: 8.75
Many thanks to Wilkey for his SCORE AND LIFT method of cutting, which I use almost exclusively now and did so with this cigar. The Light: Good Lord the aroma was awesome! Slightly sweet like nutmeg or clove (not a gross sweet). It had a cedary start which mellowed as the cigar progressed but remained evident. It also had a subtle pepperiness with a short, pleasant finish. I am not huge on pepper, but this was just right. It is full bodied but not overpowering. It is strong (nic) but not harsh. At this point I am bewildered because had I been blindfolded and asked if this were a Fuente or a Patel, I would have said Fuente! The aroma in the 2nd half has lost some sweetness and gotten stronger but is still pleasant overall. The flavor is getting more complex with some leather coming out. I had to put it down in the last third because I had borderline sweats coming on. (Cigars 1 and 2 did not have this much flavor, were much more peppery and somewhat harsh, I am thinking they were much younger due to the lack of oil on the wrapper. The flavors don’t seem to have melded yet.)

C. Construction/Performance: 8.5
The draw was a bit tight so the smoke volume was below average. (The first 2 had a loose draw and smoke vol. was average). The ash was a fine light gray, had a nice sharp burn and the ash fell at 2” where I already feel a slight buzz coming on. No touch ups required!

Final Score: A+B+(1.5)C/3.5=8.64

Final Thoughts: I’m sure I am letting the cat out of the bag by divulging this best kept secret. When you cannot wait to take the next puff, you know it is a good cigar. I also kept smelling my hands a good while after. For $2.50 a stick, this is one of the best bundle cigars I’ve ever had. SJM had them aging for 6 months and 2 of the 3 still weren’t ready. I would highly recommend buying a bundle or two if you are patient enough to let them sit for a year. These sell out quickly from Famous. This is my final review for SJM’s bundle challenge and of all 6 brands, this one is hands down my favorite. I will definitely be ordering some in the fall. Thank you SaxJazzMan for the experience!

I might have a review or two for you pretty soon here Marc :whistling:

My 30 days as a member will be on July 30th! That gives me about 48 hours to get in a post.

It was my birthday, so I pulled out the big guns.

Don Carlos Anniversario

Size, Toro, Age, not very old, Wrapper, Well, it had a black ribbon, but I could only find reference to it being "Opus X like"

I removed the cello, and began peeling the tape that held the ribbon and cedar tightly to this beautiful smelling cigar. As I unwound the cedar, it left behind sap drops. The effect of the sap on the silky smooth wrapper was not unlike beads of sweat on the well tanned ass in Marc's sig tag. The bunching at the foot looked loose, while the bunching at the head looked perfect after clipping the cap. The pre-light draw was just right, with subtle tobacco flavors.

I generally find that the very first half inch or so of a cigar is the worst half inch of the cigar. Not this time. This tribute came right out of the gate with smooth, silky, creamy smoke. I've smoked cigars in the past that I would describe as creamy, but never like this. The richness of the smoke made me want to swallow it as if it were food. The entire cigar remained creamy, but never again as rich as in the first inch.

The cigar was full of flavor. How I smoked it played a part in what I tasted. If I stayed patient, and smoked slowly, I was rewarded with a flavor that I want to associate with thick red wines, yet at the same time that doesn't seem right. If I hurried, instead of becoming hot and bitter, it simply transitioned into rich tobacco flavors. The area between the foot and the band was also infused with a noticeable cedar flavor, which was to be expected with the coating of sap.

I honestly have very little recollection of the final third of this cigar. In addition to a couple of phone calls from well wishers and my two and a half year old who refused to nap that afternoon, I was feeling just a tad green. I didn't go into this with the fullest of stomachs, but it certainly wasn't empty.

The burn on this cigar was nowhere near razor sharp, but close enough that it did not require any help from me. The cigar did go out a number of times from the band to the head, but as much as anything, I blame this on distractions and slowing way down to keep from falling over.

The lower band on this cigar reads: "A tribute to my hero Carlos Arturo Feunte...Carlito". Carlito has outdone himself. He has shown once again that he is a master blender. These cigars are masterpieces. I have one each of the other two sizes. Perhaps next year's birthday...

CAO Italia Novella
Country: Nicaragua
Length/Ring: 4 1/2 x 46
Shape: Rothschild
Wrapper: Natural
Strength: Full
Age: 1 year

Excellent looking cigar, the construction is as good as it gets. Great aroma. Very smooth with minimal veins. The cigar was cut with a Xikar2 cutter, perfect cut as it is 99% of the time. The pre-light draw is full and pleasant, and undertones foreshadow the spices hiding inside. The cigar was lit by a dual torch butane lighter.

1st 3rd
The smoke is plentiful!!<---- I'm sure this should be accredited to the excellent draw. The flavor is full, with medium+ tobacco flavor along with spice and leather. The initial prediction is this is going to be a pretty good cigar. Normally I prefer a lighter, more natural colored wrapper, but am sometimes surprised by the taste of a darker or sungrown wrapper. I puffed for 3-5 minutes then a bad roll job begins to rear its ugly head.

2nd 3rd
The spice and leather tastes are still abundant, but now enters a third flavor... Very hard to place, as best as could be imagined, almost a slight smoldering plastic or rubber flavor. Maybe this could be attributed to the massive burn error that is burning 1 full inch faster than the opposite side (I mean this is as bad as you have seen... Holes are appearing in the side along with visible gaps and veins in the tobacco leaves which weren't present [as far as I could tell] upon pre-light inspection which felt very smooth) that try as I might cannot curb. This is not why I smoke cigars. I try and contain the devastation but to no avail.

Final 3rd
Well, maybe more like almost the final third. The taste at this point is hard to deal with. The rubber/plastic/"if a cigar was older than dirt, than thrown into some muddy dirt" flavor is really starting to blossom at this point. Wow this thing is disgusting and really smells horrible. Again, the 'this really isn't why I smoke cigars' thought enters my mind and I decide it's time to cut my losses. And you know, the hour or so after you smoke a "goodie", that taste that lingers on your palette that reminds you how good your senses, and your tongue, and taste specifically can appreciate a good smoke? Well there will be none of that here. Within 15 minutes the whiskey coke I was drinking at the time was not enough to extinguish the repulsive taste in my mouth that I had to brush my teeth and have a cup of tea to slay the evil "italia dragon breath". Sad because I kinda like cao's black and gold flavors, but this blend begs for a bit more thought. Granted, maybe the construction issue was the problem, but this is not a cigar I am personally looking forward to trying again.

Great review! I was wondering about that line. I have been enjoying the Bazilia line but think I'll stay away from the "italia dragon breath".
