On This Day, Dec. 7, 1941

Thanks Doc for your posts in this thread. All well stated  . I salute my Father and Uncles who served so gallantly in that horrible conflict.

I wasn't a history major, but I did take a course in Historiography.
Doc.

History was invented back when you were in school?

Thanks for the reminder of my Grandfather who spent time in Maine in a code room later on in the War. He passed a couple years ago, and two more of the Grandparents since. There is something about that generation that makes me think it was the glory years of modern USA. I seems our struggles today pale to what they faced in the 20s-mid 40s. Their stories are captivating.

Ken Burns' The War part 2 is up next!

My grandfather was actually stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. He survived the attack and the rest of the war. For their 50th wedding anniversary he and my grandmother went to Hawaii for I believe a whole month and went to the memorial. He used to always tell me and my brother stories about the war and Pearl Harbor. Too bad I dont remember much of them now.

That generation is passing. If you haven't already done so and you're able to, PLEASE sit down and talk to any family members or neighbors who lived through that time. Pass their history on to the next generations. We owe everything to those who went before us.

Okay, mini-sermon over.

My Grandfather born in 1915 shot one of his toes off at 14 with a 412 shotgun.
He was not able to get in the military when the war started due to this condition.
That man went to work as a welder and welded wings for B52's

He worked like a dog his whole life. Never asked for shit from anybody.
He always provided. Maybe not the best, but everything that was needed.

The greatest generation

A couple of years ago I went to the Arizona Memorial. It was truly a moving experience and it was nice to see the beginning and end of the war represented by two battleships, as the Missouri was anchored in the distance.

My dad was also 11 when the attack happened. Although he was in Texas playing baseball with his brothers at the time. This I'm sure is another moment that you remember exactly where you were when it happened. Thanks for reminding us of this day Doc.

I wasn't a history major, but I did take a course in Historiography. It's the study of how history is written. This statement above is the perfect example of someone trying to re-write history to support their political views. There is a lot of this going on today. You need to be wary of it.

Doc.

I wasn't a History major either, but I'm not trying to re-write anything. The facts are that many of the social programs burdening our nation today (or I'll be blunt and just say Medicare and Social Security) were formulated in the 40's (New Deal) or have come from the precedents set during that time period. Without going too much farther I'll just say it's hard for me to pick between the worst Presidents ever, but FDR is in my top 3. I will again express my appreciation for the people who fought in WW2 as well as all other wars and conflicts from then until now. It is because of them I am free to criticize like I am. I will never speak poorly of a veteran.

Good Lord.

Social Security - 1935
Medicaire - 1965
The New Deal 1933
WPA - 1935

Let's see, the three biggies not listed that can be laid at his door are, Securities and Exchange Commission... Tennessee Valley Authority... and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Now, I could be wrong but these programs had nothing to do with the 1940's. They were the result of The Great Depression. One of the top three worst Presidents... that's just fuggin' stupid.

If you're going to be critical you should probably have some knowledge about what you're talking about. Your "facts" prove your ignorance not your argument.

That is quite possibly the stupidest rambling I have read here.

How did I miss that!

Thanks NA for clearing that up for Ery!

Thanks for the remembrance Doc, it's hard to believe that all of the hardship and sacrifice will be forgotten from WWII but i'm starting to believe that is what is happening. God Bless America!

Thank you for looking up the dates for me. I did have them wrong and should have been more specific. However, my point was that FDR opened the door during his presidency for the massive government spending we have today. As far as Medicare goes I still think the idea of "the government will take care of me in my old age" came from FDR's era (which goes into the 40's).

We will never forget, thank you Doc and the rest of our brave Brothers and Sisters including my dad (who served in the Navy for 21 proud years!) for your bravery and commitment to freedom all of us who call this great country home enjoy.

How in the holy hell does a thread about remembering Pearl Harbor become a political discussion?

The injection of politics into EVERYTHING is a large part of why I don't talk to a lot of people I care about very much anymore. Contrary to what seems to have become conventional wisdom, not every aspect of life needs to be looked at through a political lens. Most of us live in the real world.

And you'd still be wrong. I'd expect nothing less from a crack addict.
