The Black Keys

Just getting into em the past few days. Heard "When the lights go out" on the "Black Snake Moan" soundtrack. Real gritty bluesy sound.

Check em out.

Bill - great to see you enjoying these bands...all are really, truly great guys and down to earth. You still need to check out The Ducky Boys and Mark Lind and you also gotta check out The Prodigals. Next to The Pogues, The Prodigals are one damn fine class act. Do yourself a favor and give some time to diggin' into their arsenal of releases. And please, please, please check out the godfathers of all this...Cock Sparrer. Once you do, you'll realize what true greatness is all about. :D

Oh, and give the west coast some props and check out Swingin' Utters back from my old home-town of San Francisco.

And as for Victory Records...I have an old contact there from way back when Victory used to be nothing but a pure straight-edge label. I'll give them a shout and see if they know anything.

:D

If I remember correctly, it was YOU who I first learned about The Tossers from so I thank you very much for that one!

Oh and if you can find out anything from Victory Records, that would be very much appreciated!

Haven't forgotten this thread Bill - just haven't rec'd a response from my buddy at Victory. Plus, now I'm heading out tomorrow for a bit more R&R out west, then to Cabo, then back east and boating down to Antigua, then Dominica. So, will be gone for a few weeks or so. But, when I hear somethin', I'll pass it your way. ;)

well then...i just went to the Projekt Revolution Tour w/ Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Placebo, Julien-K, Mindless Self Indugence, Saosin, The Bled, Styles of Beyond, and Madina Lake...

MSI totally brought the house down on the first stage before the main opened up at 1600...it was so hot during the whole thing that not one of the other bands besides LP, MCR, and MSI had any energy...It was as if they were just going through the motions....

But other than the bands listed i'm not really listening to music right now....to much sports radio to listen to

Still no response on this yet Bill...will let you know when/if I get one.

By the way...for some reason, I've pulled out some Paddy Reilly lately. His version of "Fields of Athenry" is the best version I have ever heard, and ever will. Fully captures the melancholy of this song.

Live version of "Fields of Athenry" by Paddy Reilly...cuts off though.

Have also been listening to a great deal of The Pogues, The Prodigals, Sullivan's Jack and Shilelagh Law lately. If you've not picked up on Sullivan's Jack or Shilelagh Law yet, you'd be well advised to if you're a fan of Paddy "Rock" at all.

Shilelagh Law - Christmas in New York...among the finest tributes to 9/11..

Another live version of Christmas in New York

Sullivan's Jack - Miles to Go

and Neck has been getting a great deal of play around my pad lately as well:

Neck

beastie boys - the mix up
metro station
we the kings
all time low
explosions in the sky

i could go on.

Thanks for the update MiamiCubano.

The week before last, I saw The Tossers at five different shows when they were here on their latest tour. George saw them last night in Chicago. :D

I've got to put together a post about my adventures.

Getting back to what I've bought recently, I picked up the latest Dropkick Murphys The Meanest of Times which I think is awesome even though some of the old-time fans don't like it that much. I have tickets for their sold out show at the Avalon in Boston on September 30th but I don't know if I'm actually going to go. I saw DKM on September 14th three days before they released the new CD and they did six songs from it and they're fantastic!

The band that was touring with The Tossers are The Vacancies and I picked up their latest CD "Tantrum." These guys are a straight punk band out of Cleveland. I got a chance to talk quite a bit with lead singer Billy Crooked and guitar player Dave Long. Check out their song "Below Merlot" on their website, it's my favorite one from the new CD. These guys put on a great show so be sure to see them if they're ever in your area.

No problem Bill.

Glad you got to see a good dose of The Tossers. They are damn good and a great bunch.

I picked up the new DKM cd too and I gotta say, even having been with these boys since the Mike days, I still love this one. It's awesome in my estimation, and just a further step in the evolution of the DKM.

Not alot of new music, but just bought this album a week ago though;

Heres an example; http://youtube.com/watch?v=0IYe329Jp24

Memphis Slim, with Matt Murphy on guitar.

Have not bought anything new but did pick up

Alkaline Trio - Remains, Maybe I'll Catch Fire
Armor for Sleep - What to do When You Are Dead
At The Drive In - Relationship of Command

I know it is a lot of bands with "A" but that was as far as I got in my search.

anyone here listen to the smashing pumpkins??? they just released a new album!!!

One of my former co-workers is a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan but I'm not really into their music that much. They cover a Thin Lizzy song "Dancing in the Moonlight" which is pretty good. At his wedding, they played a Smashing Pumpkins song for the bride and groom's first dance. His license plate is SMSHNG and his wife's is PMPKNS.

Like I said, they're huge fans. :D

Most recent album I bought was Bebel Gilberto: Remixed. Killer voice combined with techno-jazz and downtempo electronica. I forget her father's name, but he was (is?) a big-time Brazilian jazz guy who I think was supposed to have created bossa nova.

Black Moth Super Rainbow is probably my favorite newer band. I cannot describe their music, but they use a lot of distortion, 70's-era synths and vocoders to create what I think is a very original sound.

Not new at all...but on my way across Biscayne Bay this evening, windows down, blasted this along with a slightly-overcast, yet still gorgeous approaching sunset...and all was right with the world...

Rave on John Donne, rave on thy Holy fool
Down through the weeks of ages
In the moss borne dark dank pools

Rave on, down through the industrial revolution
Empiricism, atomic and nuclear age
Rave on down through time and space down through the corridors
Rave on words on printed page

Rave on, you left us infinity
And well pressed pages torn to fade
Drive on with wild abandon
Uptempo, frenzied heels

Rave on, Walt Whitman, nose down in wet grass
Rave on fill the senses
On nature’s bright green shady path

Rave on Omar Khayyam, rave on Kahlil Gibran
Oh, what sweet wine we drinketh
The celebration will be held
We will partake the wine and break the Holy bread

Rave on let a man come out of Ireland
Rave on on Mr. Yeats,
Rave on down through the Holy rosey cross
Rave on down through theosophy, and the golden dawn
Rave on through the writing of "A Vision"
Rave on, rave on, rave on, rave on, rave on, rave on

Rave on John Donne, rave on thy Holy fool
Down through the weeks of ages
In the moss borne dark dank pools

Rave on, down though the industrial revolution
Empiricism, atomic and nuclear age
Rave on words on printed page
