About a year ago I was in your exact same position--the last cigar I had smoked was a Phillies or a Swisher 10 years previous that made me a little green.
I asked the proprietor of my local shop for some advice, and while I didn't necessarily care for each of his recommendations, they were at least educational in some way.
I've been keeping a journal with the date, cigar brand, size, construction notes, flavor profile, circumstances (company, location, food or drink), the band itself, and any other impressions I have of each cigar I smoke. It's helped me to keep track of things I like and things I dislike. I'm not experienced enough to really detect any subtle patterns to my tastes yet, but it does keep me from accidentally buying something I've already tried and decided I didn't like, as well as also helping me to figure out what directions I might like to go in with new things to try.
Take a poke around in the Review section of the forum just to get an idea of the types of things that other people make a note of. Don't worry about getting too involved like some of the reviews may be--just get a general appreciation for the things you should try to look for on your own.
