Hello, i am newer to the cigar world.I have a problem with my cigars not storing well.I use a puck with 70% RH beads and My cigars are splitting and burning hot.The meter says it is 69-70% and it is a digital. Also on some of them they do not smoke much till the end.I bought a fiver of the Gurkha fuerte and the wrappars all fall off once lit.they seem to be dry while others burn like they are to moist. Please help
thank you, Bill

Have you calibrated your hygrometer to ensure its accuracy? If not, I think that would be a good place to start.

Can we get a picture of your setup? Also, how much downtime are you giving the smokes before you try them out? From some online vendors I get smokes that come in pretty wet and others come in quite a bit on the dry side. More time in a stable humi helps even things out.

Yes i have. I took table salt and distilled water in a large cap set in a plastic bag over night and adjusted to 75% this is what directions said.if you have a better or different way please share.I dont know anyone else i can check with.thanks for your prompt reply,Bill

I will have to post this evening as i am at work till later this evening, thanks

Are they cracking/splitting when they are sitting in your humidor or when you smoke them?

The salt test is dead on, so if you did that with your hygrometer and calibrated it, then you should be good to go.

What about down time/rest for the smokes, how long do they sit before you smoke them?

Also, the above question about when they split is very relevant.

they start to split after i have smoked about half way through. My cigars are anywhere from 5 months to 3 weeks old.I would think that 3 weeks should be plenty of time but i must be wrong......
would changing to 65% be somthng to try?

If the wrapper problems are mainly with the Gurkha Fuertes, don't worry about it. There is probably nothing wrong with your set up. I had ten of these and except for one, they all split/exploded.

You've answered your own question! If you are keeping your cigars at 75% humidty or higher then you will continue to have the issue with your wrappers rolling off or cracking. Lower your humidty to under 70% and see how they smoke.

I have kept them at 69-70%,I have been told that 70% is the goal. Cigars kept at 65% will still store and smoke properly? And if so what is the lowest acceptable humidity.
also if i put a bowl of RH beads that are new and have never been activated will they still abrorb excess humidity?
sorry if this is basic knowledge to you,but i truelly dont know the correct answers thanks,Bill

Yes, drop your % to 65 and see if it makes a difference.

Yes, putting 65% beads in the humi will help lower the humidity. You'll be happy you did.

The only real rule is 70% and below. It is all personal preference. I know of people that like certain cigars in the 58-60% range. Like in all things in life YMMV.

Many people prefer to store their cigars at 65% humidity. If you do switch to 65% be sure to remove the 70% humidity beads. Another thing to try (if this isn't a cigar specific problem as suggested) would be to dry box the cigar. This would lower the humidity in the cigar just before smoking it. Worth a try.

Well thank all of you for your help.I am going to get new beads and see what happens over the next couple weeks.Again thank all of you.Bill S

You might try this experiment: Before clipping, run the cigar ever so briefly under tap water. Roll it in your hands until the water has permeated the wrapper. Let it sit for 5 minutes, clip and smoke.

I tend to do something like that when the Santa Ana's are up. Those darn dry winds seem to kill whatever cigar i am trying to smoke. But what i do is take a clean lint free towel and dampen it with Distilled water and wrap it around the cigar for a minute or so.Then let it dry for a rew minutes. The wrapper rarely splits then.

I won a 5er last year on cigarbid. It was a 5er of Gurkha. I had the same problem the wrapper on everyone of them would split as soon as it was lit. I had no other problems with any of the other cigars in my humidor just the 5 Gurkha.

Of all the cigars to evaluate this issue with, it's hard to use a Gurkha cigar that mostly use very thin wrapper leaves. Under perfect storage conditions they can split if you smoke them outdoors with a slight cold breeze. What other brands of cigars do you have in there? Do you have the same issues with them too?

The recommendation of moistening the cigar is a good one. My technique is to wet a paper towel, wring it out, and roll the cigar in it for a few minutes.

You're on the right track, experimentation is an ongoing practice for all of us cigar smokers.
