Most expensive cigar out there?

Being a relative newbie in the hobby, I've been on some of the online stores and several of the b&m stores in my area and I've seen to an extent the high cost of some of the sticks out there.

Now I know "value" is relative and on a place like C-bid, value is whatever someone is willing to pay.

I'm curious, what is considered the most expensive stick out there on the market today? Is it because of supply and demand or is that stick that good to command such a price?

Just some curiosities :)

And up and up. There was recently a news story about pre-embargo (hence legal) cuban cigars in the US (real ones, not the bullshit pinar cigars) that go for multiple hundreds per cigar. There are also many vintage cubans (post embargo) that go for hundreds of dollars each.
 
I've seen a humidor full of pre-embargo Cuban cigars at a shop in FL, and these are the real thing, and they were selling upwards of $200+. However, again like you stated, part of that is perceived value, and what someone with money to burn and is uneducated might pay.


I've read articles in CA about what some of these vintage Cuban cigars are going for at auction and over in HK, and it's mind blowing.

Or how about that Cohiba 40th Humidor that someone won the right to purchase in a raffle at the festival recently, for $18,000 for 40 cigars I believe. If I have my numbers right (which I may not) that works out to $450/cigar. Of course there's also the value of the actual humidor they come in which would take away from that previous figure.

At the Christie's auction tommorrow there is a box of Davidoff Dom Perignon early 1980's estimated to sell between 4700 to 6600 usd. That $188 per cigar at the low end.

I did a google search of "most expensive cigars" and came up with some interesting links.

I think some cigars that are found in posh eateries and hotels are just high end cigars with over inflated prices for the rich.
But I will have to say true pre embargo gars are probably the most expensive if you can find them.Most are in auctions.

Very interesting articles. The second link has it about $135/cigar, but you also get a humidor. So I think that would offset the price a little.

The first article sounds like what you stated, the over-inflated, just for the rich. Is it because they are in an area where the "rich" frequent? Like a Beverly Hills where everything is over inflated and because the retailers can?

I guess auctions would be a tough gauge to go by because the "value" is whatever someone is willing to pay for one cigar or box. We recently saw where people were willing to pay $44+ for an Opus X. Me being a newbie, the general impression is that is WAY overpriced, but someone most likely paid that price.

Most b&m's set a price and it's a + or - amongst other b&m's and online retailers due to competition. If any retailers are reading this, what is your most expensive line in your inventory?
 
It is hard to go buy what shops pay because some charge msrp or tad below,some have no choice but to charge more and some just plain gouge.
Here there are a few shops that sell opus at msrp or couple dollars more while at the sametime there are others here who charge way over that.Same for padron 64 and 26....some charge msrp while one shop here charges $35/stick for a 64 Imperial or a 26 #2.

As for auctions...sure prices can go sky high but some auctions have cigars that you will never see in a store or in production ever again.
Starting prices are high to begin with.

Are you asking for the highest priced in-production stick today.....msrp-wise?
 
Well this isn't exactly mainstream, cause you won't find them.

But Gurkha sells "His Majesty's Grand Reserve" boxes for an MSRP of $10,000.00 for a box of 20.

They only make 10 boxes a year.

So I guess that gets down to about $500.00 per stick. But like I said, you're not gonna find it in your local B&M, so doesn't really count.

For the sake of good discussion :), we could go with that question of the highest priced, in production today-msrp.

By reading through the thread, the out of production or pre-embargo stick command a hefty price at auctions. It's like a painting by a dead artist.

It could count because they still produce them?

I wonder who gets the 10??
 
Go back and look at some of the prices paid at past Christie's auctions......
