Do yourself a favor and return the feathers now.

As has already been said, if your mattress/box springs are shot to hell you're wasting your money purchasing a topper. Purchase a good firm mattress and top it with 2-3inches of memory foam and you'll be good to go.

Someone mentioned heat retention in the memory foam. Yes, the memory foam is a very good insulator and your body heat will be transfered to the foam to some extent. How much depends on room temperture, your own body, and how much cover you use when sleeping. Do like I do and sleep butt naked with no covers. (hehe.... try to erase that mental picture..go ahead, just try)

That's just not right!

Anyhow - temp - yes, it's warm and cozy! ALSO - if the room is COLD - the mattress hardens like a rock!
(I said ROCK!)

The tempur company doesn't really market well above the frost line....for just that reason. I slept on a tempur for about 3 years...hmmm, have to call her back sometime...well, in the winter, unless the room was warm the mattress was hard...but it eased once body heat took over.

I'd defiantly get one!!!

We have a sleep number bed and it's awesome. The wife and I both get what we want out of it, and I can actually make adjustments if my back really starts to act up.

We bought the 2 inch foam topper from Costco last year and put it on our 10-year old mattress. It works pretty well. We weren't sure if we'd like it or not and it has been a good way to test it out without buying a whole new mattress. When we do decide to buy a new mattress, we will probably go with one that has the foam built-in.

Memory foam...!!!

OK...so two+ years later I finally pulled the trigger. Here's the story:

We just got a Tempur-pedic Celebrity.

We had a Sealy for a couple weeks and returned it. We went back for a Sterns and Foster latex mattress....actually BOUGHT IT, and before walking out of the store decided to take 'one more look'(that's always a bad idea :D)....a look at the Celebrity.

We looked at each other and I said, "Ok, I'll tell her we'll take it."

It is now all dressed and ready for our nights sleep!

We also ask them to throw in 2 Tempur-pedic 'Comfort Pillows'..and they did.

3" memory foam topper with a mattress cover on top of that. The cover helps with the heat problem, not totally, but it does help. Wouldn't go to sleep without it! Best sleep I've ever had. I got mine at Overstock.com. Check them out as they have really good prices. They also threw in two memory pillows for free.

We got the 14" memory foam from Overstock for $630 a couple of months ago. A fantastic value for the money!

Gary, you might want to reconsider that price of the tempur-pedic, and check out the Overstock one.

If your mattress is near 10 years old first replace it and then work on the feathers or foam question.
