Man on the Gurkha band

My Stepfather was a WWII veteran. Part of Merill's Marauders. We are going back over 40 years since he told me so many war stories. He often spoke of the Gurkha and Kachin warriors. I remember that he held them in the highest esteem. Many of his stories spoke of their bravery, ferocity, and loyalty. These were always my favorite stories. Some even of midnight raids to make sure the enemy never woke up. He just made them sound so "cool".

He did give me a Kurkri, their famous knife that you see on the cigar band, which he had brought back from Burma. My mother promptly hid it! I've never seen that knife to this day. She swears she lost it.
I really do wish I had that today.

A word about the Kachin. He once said that if it wasnt for the Kachin guides, he'd still be trying to cut his way through the jungle.

Cool story... My dad was in Nam' but he hates talking about it.


Seems like the Gurkha warriors were bad ass... Too bad the cigars are just overpriced ass!!
 
I had the pleasure of working with some moderen Gurkhas while I was deployed to Iraq last year. They were attached as always, to the British Army units that were posted in Baghdad. Really great guys, would go to war with them any day.

I'll bet he had some great stories. The Marauders did some incredible things in their time. My last unit traced their lineage back to the 2d Troop Carrier Squadron, which flew the Hump and supported your stepfather and his compatriots.

I always heard stories that if you heard the Gurka battle cry-- "Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!"-- you might as well not run because then you'd die tired. Now if only the cigars named after them were a little better...
