It seems Dion has taken the leap into the pricing stratosphere similar to the likes of Davidoff, Fuente, and Padron with his $27-$30 ‘One Off’ label cigars. I don’t remember any his cigars being quite this expensive.

But....with a big story usually comes a big price. Welcome to the club +53 Super Robusto.

I just looked at the link. While I respect the brand, that heavenly status price is not going to make me rush out. In my travels about town, if I find a single robusto for $15, I’ll try it because if you don’t try you don’t know. Perhaps they think their status is there’s don’t stink.

As long as enough people buy it to sustain the business model of the company producing it....I'd say it's not overpriced at all.

Now, "...is it 'worth' it..." is a completely different question. That's much more based on personal preference and taste....and, we all know there's no accounting for taste.....:p
 
Just to clarify, it's just the +53 Super Robusto that priced so high... the other OneOff vitolas are pretty standard. When one of the cigar blogs asked about the +53's high price tag, Dion was tight lipped.

My uninformed theory: Medio Tiempo. Aganorsa grows it, and while Warped and Casa Fernandez have used it, Illusione to my knowledge has never done so.

When sales fall, but the $27.00 -$30.00 price point removes many people from your customer pool. We have a B & M in AZ, that stock & sells $500.00/stick Davidoff's. That $500.00 Davidoff is not in my humidor.
 
While I enjoy and can appreciate a higher priced cigar, I start to question cigars at the $30 plus range. I do love the Padron's, Arturo Fuente and Davidoff at the $20 plus price point. My question continues to be, is a $35 plus cigar that much better than the lesser priced cigars?
 
I just don't understand....

A 13 year old JL1 or 2 for $16 beats anything on that list. If I want to spend $28, then there are a ton of 20 year old cuban cigars that are crazy good... Even the fresh Cohibas Robustos are better (and cheaper, around $16) than these...

Right now, I am stocking up on some dark and oily 14's and 15's... (still about $10 to $15 a piece, depending on what you get) These are going to be amazing in 5 to 10 years....

I don't keep a lot of Fuentes or Padrons onhand, but when it comes to premium priced non-Cubans I do keep a lot of Illusiones and La Palina Goldies around. Dion won me over with his $$$$ Haut 10's, they just hit the spot when I want something special that's just a little different. I have a box of OneOff Julietas and a fiver of Cartuchos on the way, but I'm in no rush to make them a regular purchase unless they are seriously good. 9 out of 10 cigars I smoke are Cuban, mostly regular production from '08 onward and a growing horde of John's EL's. For the money they just give me the experience I'm looking for whether it's everyday smoking or a nice night with my friends.

A little off the specific subject, but the Epernay Le Voyage is seriously the only "A" sized smoke I'd keep in stock for semi-regular smoking. Doesn't seem to get boring like the few I've tried. But by all means, feel free to change my mind, lol!
 
Now it’s Steve Saka making the jump into the absurd pricing arena with one stick. And it comes with a big story to match the big price. ;)

illusione has always had a thing for symbology. But I like Carlin's take on the subject, "I leave the symbols to the symbol minded". :)
 
On the one hand, I appreciate a 'no holds barred' approach to doing something, even if it's just a one time experiment, which Steve Saka has said this is.

On the other hand......that's a genuinely high price to pay for a smoke. That easily buys 6 or 8 really good, high end production cigars.

Worth is hard to define; it may be completely worth it to some, but not to me. JMHO, etc.....

This is true.

My problem is that the leaf and rolling of the cigar is probably in the $6-10 range per cigar if that much. I paid $12 for a Cuban puro rolled by Cueto. La China wasn't available and she is in the same range. So like in all things YMMV.
