 I have been recently been getting sucked into that show 'Moonshiners' on the television, and It has been peeking my interest in "Moonshine". Now I have been on the hunt for what types of "Moonshine" are out there on the shelves. Early last fall I tried some "moonshine" my neighbors had purchased at our local. It was delicious, and tasted just like apple pie! Sweet, but not too bad for my liking. We talked briefly about the 'tasting', but not much came from it...
 
 I had forgotten that day until a few weeks ago when I was in my local B&M and saw a couple glass mason jars packaged up for sale. I was in the market for a engagement gift, and noticed these two beautiful jars that intrigued me. "Junior Johnson's Midnight Moon". I read the labels and thought it was a great gift idea, not to mention an interesting product. They had an Original and Strawberry. I grabbed both, but gifted them both. I asked the girl at the register how often they got it in, she didn't really have a good answer for me for she "did't know too much about it". Guess I will just have to keep my eye open for another opportunity when they are back on the shelf...
 
 Has anyone else tried any of these flavors of Midnight Moon? Thoughts? Also, any experience with people's own recipes or know of any other small batch labels out there such as Ole Smoky ? I have also been watching some youtube videos that involve a 5 gallon deep fryer.... :whistling:  :D 

I am interested in hearing peoples thoughts. Thanks

For you youngsters , way back in '63 while still in the Navy one of mates went home,on leave to Tennessee and came back with a quart of shine . I can still remember the holy shit ( not sure about the butter ) smack factor. Made for a few painless days. I have seen some legal stuff on the tube, so may just have to try it also. Ain't that some crew on Moonshiners, yowzaa! :)
 
All the NH liquor stores carry Ole Smokey! I have also been HOOKED on that damn show and been meaning to get by the store to grab a jar. Louich and I made a little wager on the playoffs and he kinda lost so he sent me the funds to grab a jar. I will be hitting the store today to pick it up tonight. The have the Cherry and peach or the classic white lightning. I may go with the classic!

Paul- I was thinking the same thing about stopping by the local today when I woke up. There are two in town, so I will be stopping at both and I'll see what I can come up with. I like cherry flavored things, and I forever have been known to add fresh cherries to my Jack Daniel's bottles, so I will be looking for that. I wouldn't mind trying some of the other flavors as well, but I agree that going with the original first may be the best way. However, I HATE anything peach - so I will definitely be skipping the Ole Smoky Peach flavored one.
 
Here is a video on YouTube I thought was pretty interesting. I would never do this because it is illegal but it was pretty straight forward. Real beneficial, you know, for historic knowledge of a time passed.  :whistling:

If it is sold in a store it ain't shine no matter what the label says. Lowest of the low grade corn liquor for folks who don't know any better.
 
17%? That's Bailey's. I haven't finished watching it yet, but if I heard him correctly, he's making the equivalent to wine.

All hail the alcohol god ! Thanks for clearing this up for me AVB. Thought I was buying legit stuff and that I knew what I was doing, but I clearly don't... However, I still look forward to trying some of this lowest of the low grade stuff.

:laugh:  I was thinking more along the lines of the process CJ. If I understand the process, adding more sugar can kick it up a notch. Also, watch the whole video. It ends up being 130 proof !
Besides, you know you are more of a Bailey's on the rocks man anyways.
 
I agree clearly this is not the FULL alcohol boom that is brewed in the woods but I still want to try it!
 
Maybe Yojimbo will send us some real stuff I think he lives down near all he action we see on TV... :whistling:

Call me arrogant or conceited, but it always thought the process what pretty straight forward. Not to mention if those hillbilly one toothed hicks can make it, I feel confident I can make a batch if I was so inclined. I may not hit it on the head the first shot, but it doesn't appear to be rocket science.


I mean hell, if you think you can do it Austen, I'm in the clear!  :laugh:
 
CJ- you are arrogant and conceded.  :laugh: Also, don't get confused CJ. I didn't think it was a 'difficult' process, just interested in the simple DIY setups out there. Im sure not everyone wants to hammer their own copper stills.

Whatever you have to tell yourself canoe boy! ;) I've seriously considering doing this for years now, but I don't have the space at the moment, not to mention the ability. Maybe one of these days we will get together at one of our houses and have a ball!
 
I'm working around thing with a buddy to get the stuff we need and try to produce some shine. I'll keep you posted when we are more adavanced in the project.
