Keeping the fire going

Tonight I smoked a Tatuaje Reserva SW and it's a great cigar, but like many other Tat's I had to constantly relight it b/c it would turn off. I was wondering does this happen to anyone else? I know it's not the RH (65%) at which I keep my Tat's b/c I store other cigars in the same humidor, i.e. AF's with the Tatuaje's and I never have this problem while I smoked a AF. It always follows the same pattern, I'm sitting there puffing away moderately and when I'm about to take my next puff I notice that the draw doesn't pull alot of smoke and the edge or rim of the foot of the cigar doesn't burn, only the inside filler stays a little lit. By my next puff a minute later, poof! The cigar turned off by itself. Why can't the Tatuaje stay lit?

This just isn't related to Tat's. I've smoked my fair share of cigars and have experienced the binder/filler burning while the wrapper doesn't. Hell, even my beloved Opus X does this once in awhile. I know for a fact it isn't because of my humidity as my Avallo is running overtime in this dry heat to maintain a 64%. Luckiliy this is common for the Avallo during the winter dry months.

I smoked an JdN Antano and experience this same thing last night. I have no idea what causes it, but it isn't just Tat's. And yes, I've had problems with the Tat's lately so I've stopped buying them altogether. The burn issue and taste profile seems to be lacking for me so I gave up on them for now.

Good to know. I had been sent this stick a week or so before I smoked it, and I probably should have let it sit.

This was also back when I was using a cheap eBay (non Spanish cedar lined) humidor. Perhaps that had something to do with it?

Every one I've smoked had a nice sharp burn. I keep them at 60%.

Same here. This is the key Christian. Plus you've got to be patient and leave them be for at least a month or two. When will you all learn that 60% is king?

:D

LOL! Alright Craig, as of today I'm going to invest in purchasing new 60% beads for my humidor. I guess I still hold on to that myth that 65%-70% is the ideal RH for cigars, obviously not. Let the test begin!

I had the same issue at 65-67%... lowered to 60-62% and they smoked much better. Probably due to the fact Pepin dips all his sticks in oil olive before boxing them :p :p Seriously though, the wrappers on the Tats seem to be thick and oily and would greatly benefit from down time.

65% and Tats burn fine for me.

I was herfing with some locals and one of them ran a torch swiftly up and down the sides of a cigar before lighting it, when I asked him about it, he said "I find it helps the burn and draw." Although he was doing it on a maduro, on a more natural shade wrapper it might ruin the flavor by toasting it prematurely.

Ok guys my results of dry boxing my Tatuaje for a minimum of 7 hrs is.....drum roll please...................................................................................................... it burned perfectly!!!! So the moral of the story here, dry box all your Tatuaje's and they'll burn Awsome!!!

The more important question is: How did it taste?

I know there's some smart-ass "K-Y" retort to "dry-boxing" in here somewhere, but I'll let it be :)

I am glad to hear it worked out. I have never had a burn problem with Tat's.

If you continue to have problems send them my way! he he :D

All this reading about smoking Tats made me light up a H6 Angeles last night from my desktop that was holding a higher-than-I-prefer 69%. And whatdoyaknow? All kinds of weird burn issues, relights required, AND a messed-up flavor profile to boot!

Even with those issues it was such a good smoke. Probably my current Favorite PC (assuming of course that the Principes are all gone. Why are the Principes always all gone?)

LMAO! Truthfully I could actually taste the flavors of the leaf come through with strength and almost a peppery meaty taste. It was great! Now I know what the secret is to have a wonderful experience with these Tat's!
