One thing I can't wrap my head around is how you make that perfectly flush cylindrical surface with these pieces. I probably sound like an idiot but do you shape the vase after putting all the pieces together or start out by precision cutting each piece? The pictures are helping, would love to see more.

I cut most of it in pie slices, glue it together then turn it on the lathe. Most of the time is spent gluing little pieces together.
