A couple months back I asked for some resume writing advice, since it'd been a number of years since I had to prepare one. Thank you, BTW to those that helped.... much appreciated.

I'd held off on sending my resume out since things seemed to improve at work a bit and the wife and I would prefer not to have any uncertainty with regards to job security until she's off maternity leave. Needless to say, the boss/owner is back to his old self and is quite effectively alienating his field supervisors. I took a chance and emailed my resume to a few other firms on Tuesday morning, and the owner of one called me this morning and left a voice mail asking me to call him back when I have a minute so we can talk and possibly set up a time to meet. That's happening next week after work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that next Wednesday goes well!

Good luck. Hopefully it works out well for you!

That call must have had you on wings all day! Crossing my fingers for ya!

Good luck with the interview Keith and I hope you find what you're looking for (better work atmosphere and all)....... :)

Good luck in your interview, Keith. Hopefully this will land you a better job situation.

Be prepared to answer questions and give examples for everything listed on your resume. Have answers for the standard questions... Strength, weakness, what would you change. Don't rag on your old boss too much or he might wonder if you'll do that to him. ;)

I don't remember what kind of industry you're in, but I assume those questions are pretty standard. Good luck, again.

John

Good luck Keith.

Is it with another surveying company?

Know your strengths and be able to put them into real scenarios. Always have that one thing you are working on improving. Be genuine. Have a sense of humor, show them everything you bring to the table.

Good luck bro.

Best of luck Keith and feel free to use our Canadian pass as a reference if you want. I'll confirm your participation if needed.

Bout time some came your way Keith! Glad to hear things are heading in the right direction and you might be able to kick that erm...'place' soon. Just remember its alright to ask them to clarify and if you need to, take a little time to answer the questions. It shows that you are actually concerned about what they are saying and not just giving a canned response.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to sitting down with the owner of the other firm. He's been a pracitsing professional for longer than I've been breathing. Right now changing jobs is a choice and not a necessity, although it feels that way sometimes. I won't be afraid to ask the hard questions that need answers and definitely won't speak ill of my current boss. He has a reputation in the surveying community here, and for the past 2 years I thought it was a bit of an exaggeration, but he's proving otherwise. This professional community is small (only about 50 practising Manitoba Land Surveyors right now) so his own actions can speak for themselves.

One thing the prospective employer mentioned was he wouldn't discuss our correspondence with "anyone in particular", so at least I know my job search won't come to be a bite-in-the-ass with my current boss.

At the point your job becomes draining enough that you cannot progress it becomes a necessity. If you do not treat it that way you will not leave and it is just downhill from there. Obviously, you already know that though so no worries

Good luck, Keith!

I had an interview quite a few years ago and I was asked some real unusual questions. I later Googled "interview questions" and most of them were listed in some of the links there.

Let us know how it turns out.

So I met with the owner of that other firm today. After talking with him for a few minutes, he mentioned that he was looking more for an assistant rather than a supervisory position which is more along the lines of what I need in terms of professional development. However, nearing the end of the 40 minutes of so we were talking he told me that I've now given him a "tremendous amount to think about". I think it went fairly well, and the tone of our talk was very friendly and positive. The position he was looking to fill he's hoping would lead to the supervisory role in 6 months to a year. I think opportunity wise this may be a good company to work with. The biggest hurdle I'd face is in the pay. With the wife on maternity leave for the next almost 4 months, and the regular bills and mortgage etc. a pay cut would be difficult. If he were to make an offer that factor (almost exclusively) will affect a decision.

Overall I think it went fairly well, and he gave me a good feeling. He's been the owner of the business since 1983, and he took it over from an old surveyor looking to retire. He did mention though the opportunity for one or more new surveyors to take over for him in the next 5 years or so since he's looking to retire. Now I'm anxiously awaiting a call or email from him in the next week or so.... see if he has made any decisions.

It's a tough decision. Good luck with this. Sometimes when you hit a wall, you need to take a small step back to get a better perspective on things, so you know whether to step to the left or right in order to move forward.
