For me, it's hard to beat that Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale in that fruity beer category. I stashed away two 4 packs last year to see how they would age...just had one the other day and it was outstanding.
The 'Fruit-to-Beer' ratio seems to hit my taste buds just right...which normally I don't like...fruits & vegetables in my beer that is.
Seems kinda odd...how come, as cigar smokers, we turn our collective noses at flavored cigars but embrace fruity beers? While I love different styles of beers...wheat, brown ales, porters, stouts, etc...I'm not a huge fan of flavored beers. Do we sub-conscientiously associate flavored beers with food?... rather than a flavored liquor?
I guess that's just another one of Life's many mysteries.... :0
I think part of it is the fruit-to-beer ratio like you mentioned. Two of my favorites are the DFH and the Southern Tier, for very different reasons, though. The ST Pumking is very sweet, like a pumpkin pie. And after dinner, I can sit down and split a bomber of it with my wife, and it's not too much. I compare that to a dessert wine. The sweetness in the Pumking is comparable to a flavored cigar.
However, with the DFH, it's much more subtle, which is why I can drink a few of them. I'd say the "pumpkin-ness" of the DFH is much like the cocoa you get from a Padron. It's there, you can taste it, you enjoy it. But Padron isn't infusing their cigars with chocolate, or dipping the wrappers in it. It's just there, not overpowering, but enjoyable.
ETA: All that being said, I think I'm done with pumpkins. The last two years, it's really gotten out of hand. Not only the sheer quantity of offerings, but the fact that so many of them are subpar at best. It also doesn't help that they start taking up shelf space in August. By the time the weather is cool enough to actually drink and enjoy them, I'm not sure I want to even see them. I've got 2 or 3 bombers I've never tried before, including the offering from the Bruery discussed above. I'm actually really looking forward to that.
And on top of it all, my local, Barrier Brewing, will have their SaazSquash on tap soon. Being that's the greatest fall beer of all time, I'm saving all my liver for that.
