It passed the committee 17-4

Tax commercials on Satuday morning cartoons. Why the hell do cigars smokers have to pay for child care? Raise the tax on kiddie toys so the parents are held responsible for paying for health care. I could on and on.

I like your thinking shooter!

I got a canned reply from Norm Coleman stating that I would pleased to know that this measure was not part of the 2008 budget. I don't think he has a damn clue as to what is going on.

I've not gotten a reply from Amy Klobuchar. Not even a "thanks for sharing". I know what her vote will be, and it will not be in my favor.

I'm keeping a close eye on this thing to see if Coleman gets in the game and earns my vote in '08 or if I need to abstain. Seeing as Al Franken will likely be his opponent, voting for Coleman or abstention are my only options.

If this thing passes I am dumping all of my cigars in Boston Harbor. Who is with me!!!!?????!!!

Guys?

Hello?

???
Uh, that was someone else's tea. Their's was safe at home which is where my cigars will be.

Time to start filling up that no longer useless bomb shelter.

BRILLIANT!!!!

Here's the response I got when I wrote to my senator about taxing cigars...

Thank you for contacting me regarding tobacco use. I welcome your thoughts and comments on this issue.

The federal tax rate on cigarettes remained unchanged at eight cents per pack from 1951 to 1982. Since 1982, the rate has been increased several times, and the current federal tax on cigarettes is 39 cents per pack.

According to U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention, an alarming 4.5 million minors currently use tobacco in this country. The cost of cigarettes is of limited importance as a factor for dissuading young people from smoking. The reality is that many of these young people, if they continue, will suffer from debilitating and deadly diseases as a result of tobacco use. Therefore, I believe it is important for Congress to encourage states and local governments in their efforts to stop underage smoking and other tobacco use.

We can limit youth access to cigarettes through enforcement of federal and state laws prohibiting tobacco sales to minors. The Justice Department has provided states with the necessary funds to conduct compliance checks and enforce their minimum age-of-sale laws, which prohibit underage tobacco sales and require retailers to check photo identification to verify age. The tobacco industry has also sponsored voluntary education campaigns to prevent minors from smoking and to encourage retailers to comply with youth access laws. Should legislation concerning new taxes or other regulations on tobacco be considered by the full Senate, you may be certain I will keep your views in mind.

I appreciate hearing from you and hope you will not hesitate to keep in touch on any issue of concern to you.

Funny thing is I never mentioned anything about cigarettes. It looks like generic responses are the way to go.

How about a box of Thompson's crap for $325.00? That is absurd. We need to get the campaign going to stop this or suddenly Canada and England will look cheap.

How about all the sugared cerals and schtuff advertised on those commercials. That helps get kids fat.

Georgie-boy has stated on more than one occasion now that he will veto this when it comes across his desk. We'll see.

Vinh, was that Kay Bailey Hutchison?!?! John Cornyn already replied in opposition to the tax increase so it had to be Hutchison. I'm stunned that she would take that position.

Vinh, tell me it ain't so!!

The point shouldn't be don't vote Democrat or Republican, the fact is that there were only 4 votes against. Republicans are buying into this too. Regardless of the party affiliation of your representatives, you need to make it clear to them that you will remember how they vote when you vote.

Yes, that was from Kay Bailey Hutchison. I hope Bush will veto this bill... He is a Texan after all...

Does anyone know who voted which way? Or easier yet, which 4 voted against the bill? Just curious. Neither Bunning nor McConnell returned my email. Hmmmmmm! :whistling:

Floyd T.

Great point, as this isn't being voted along party lines. It's being viewed as an income generating "sin tax" by members of both party's.

I e-mailed Bob Corker, let's see if he writes back.

The biggest problem for us is that no one is talking about the tax on cigars, or the associated inventory tax. It has become common practice in this country to tax the hell out of cigarettes for a good cause, and nobody really complains. The luxury tax they are imposing on cigars will shut down 95% or more of the cigar shops in this country. Just picture the inventory tax assed on lets say Davidoff's in NYC.

Somehow, word has to get out to the GP that this provission is in this seemingly feel good help the poor children bill.

I left a message with both Dodd and Lieberman....not only about the tax being too high...but abou the fact that we are :

1) relying on smokers to fund childrens health care
2) needing to get MORE smokers to fund it.

LMAO....we'll see what happens.
