A friend gave me a cigar while golfing last week and it was not bad ..... for a golfgar. I tried to order a box and there was $14 in taxes on a $54 box?

Depends where it is shipping from.. New York City has 50% tobacco tax. Omaha is 30% I believe.

Tampa Sweethearts never charges me shipping (free on orders over $150) or tax - seems like every other place charges tax. Seems like PA charges about 8.75% or something.

PA always just charges WI's 5.5%. I know there's excise in a few states.. I'm not sure the nexus regarding where the retailer is physically located. Probably a good question for Philly Chris.

Maybe they are charging me the Texas rate - I don't even know what that is. I've made 2 orders from PA this week, and doing the math the tax is around 8.75%

No receipt/invoice?

Yeah, but it just says TAX, doesn't indicate PA Tax or TX Tax.

I'm gonna double check a few recent PA orders. I usually don't worry about it because my insurance covers them.

Emotional Support sticks for my anxiety. 😛

I checked cigar.com, CI, & CP so far. First 2 are owned by same company (including cigarbid) and are in Bethlehem, PA. CP (Brandshopper) is in Bath, PA. Those 3 charge me 5.5% sales tax which is WI's rate.

You may just wanna shoot whoever's charging that rate and ask them how they came to it. It can also get tricky on physical locations vs online only.. and even then, where is the actual processing of the payment done.

I looked into state-by-state tax rates for online orders once and it seemed stupidly discombobulated. But the big boys like the 3 I mentioned seem to be doing just fine with what they're doing.
