Ok, we just moved to a new temporary residence until my wife finishes college. The last few houses we lived in had high speed cable internet or Verizon Broadband. That's all that I am really familiar with

Looks like neither is going to be an option in this house we are going to be at for the next year or two.

I am told we will have to go with <sigh> dial up. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to what provider we should contact that is either fast, cost effective, or both? My last experience with dial up was waiting what seemed an eternity fo any page to open.

Any other options/suggestions.

We use Direct TV for our Sattelite, and I was told they do not offer DSL.

Thanks for any help you send my way.

Hughesnet satellite is about your only choice. DSL speed at twice the cost.

does nobody in the area offer DSL with a landline?

some companies even offer 'naked' DSL, with no phone activation required.

Someone at work told me about them. Said it was like $700.00 to get started......................Whew! That's a lot of money.

Who is your landline provider in the area "Bill's Discount AT&T"?

In a college town you can not get cable or DSL, that is just strange. If you dont mind telling where did you move too.

Verizon is. Funny thing is that we moved about eight minutes from where we were. (After we found out the college my wife goes to, has constraints about where she can live while going for her nursing degree.)
We had Verizon high speed where we were at before, just a few minutes away. When we contacted them, we found out they did not have the service in this neighborhod. We still have Direct TV (which is owned by Verizon) and they do not offer DSL service.

We live just outside of the Fredericksburg Va. area Tim.

DSL is dependent on how far you are from a switching station...I think it maxes out at approx. 5 miles, anything beyond that is not possible for DSL.

I bought a used CURRENT version receiver and did the install myself for about $350. $225 for the equipment and the rest for the pole, concrete, wire, ends and some minor wiring in the house. Setting up the dish is not something a rank amateur should do but if you've done DSS or Dish you should be able to figure it out.

DSL is limited to about 12,000 feet from the POP (Point of Presence) of the phone company. ADSL, which is what homes use, maxes out at about 18,000 feet.

Verizon doesn't own DSS AFAIK.

Take a look at Clearwire. It uses a fairly new technology called WiMax which means service can suck in some places. The other choice would be to use a 3G modem card. These can approach the speed of DSL depending on signal strength.

I had Clearwire, hated it, but others around me have had some pretty good luck. Have you asked your neighbors what they are using?

The three big celular providers all offer celular high speed internet cards. I'm not sure what they cost. I've used one, and with a good link, not horrid, with a bad signal, slower than dial-up.

Organize a neighborhood meeting. Get one satalite dish and set up a strong enough WAN to take care of all of the contributors.

This won't work unless you get a business level plan because of DL limitations and the amount of bandwidth splitting. It might be great at 3AM but from 4 till 11 it would suck.

If you're resigned to dial up, send me a PM and I'll point you at one or more of my resellers. I manage about 2M dial ports (wholesale) nationwide.

Thanks to all for the help on this. Comcast, a local cable provider was able to provide just high speed internet service for us. They had a $19.95 for six months special running. No contract necessary.
Verizon has said that they hope to have Broadband before the end of the fourth quarter.

Hell Yeah!! gald this worked out for you bro

FYI, I have an aircard for my laptop. Anywhere I have sprint cell phone service, I get SOME speed. Anywhere where I'm on their primary network (big cities) i get near dsl speed. There's no cap or download limit. Its less than 100 a month. It allows me to be online anywhere, and I love it. Its also the worlds largest leash and keeps me close to work wherever I go. But that's the way it is in my industry. I'm never more than about 3 feet from company email.
