I'm 40 next Tuesday, my thoughts

So I turn 40 and apparently I'm supposed to be in a panic of some sort but truthfully I just don't care. I am going to have some sushi on Monday with friends and then a smoke at a local B & M. Tuesday the wife and I are doing lunch and I have my eye on a couple smokes sitting in the clock'idor.

Being a Psych person I understand why some freak but I guess for me its no big thing.

How about the rest of you who are over 40?

I'm not 40, but a couple years ago my wife and I turned 30. Leading up to it (for almost a year) it seemed like the my wife was facing the end of her world. All of a sudden she was just going to turn old. For me it was just another year. I guess I've always thought that life is too short to worry about where you're at on the timeline.

Edit to add: Happy Birthday.

There were only 2 birthdays of significance for me: 18 and 40. At 18 I was eligible for the draft and could be prosecuted as an adult. At 40 I could look my self in the eye in the mirror and say, "You are half dead...if you're lucky" ;)

I didn't wake up feeling any different than I did the day before on either of those days and neither caused me to freak out at all. You are quite right when you say "Life is too short to worry about where you're at on the timeline".

Happy upcoming birthday!

Been over 40 for 8 years...could care less. Age is a state of mind. I still feel like that Idiot 18 year old I used to be at times.

Enjoy your day...the only people that think we are old are teenagers ( like my daughter) and who really cares what they think anyway.

Smoke up bro and have fun.

Frank

Turned 49 last August.

For some reason, that one hit me. Felt kinda low for a couple of days before and then got over it. Haven't worried about any other one. Always said that age is just a state of mind.

People don't believe me when I tell them my age.

Wife just turned 40 this past October and she says it's the best year of her life. :p

Some screwball posted this a couple years ago and I think it is relevant.

I was sitting here thinking of something wise ass to say as per surfer dudes request and it occured to me. God, 47 is really old. You know you're old when you're trying to think of things that you can still do that you used to do. And while I'm still virile, handsome, strong, clever, agile and smart... there are consequences to what you do in high school, college and the military. My hands hurt all the time, my knees are getting tricky, I have a torn rotator in my right shoulder that can't be scoped and my hearing is going south.
I will no longer climb ladders over 10 feet since my ability to bounce is gone. All night fun fests with the wife consist of a brief encounter in the shower (with or without her) then a few beers and a cigar in front of the TV watching old movies till three A.M. I still split 3 cords of wood every year but what used to take a weekend now takes two weeks (the reason for this, I'm sure, is due to global warming which makes the wood harder and more sinewy... seriously!) I walk/run my dogs twice a day every day 2 miles at a pop.
Now you're asking yourself, "What the hell does this have to do with being old?" My reply to this is, "Not a thing." Just thought I'd make you housebound youngsters feel guilty about the sedentary lifestyles you may be leading. So... the young guys are saying, "47? God you're old", and the old guys are saying, "47? That's not so old." Let me tell you someting Old Guys, you are wrong. And to you Young Guys, here's hoping that you can reach the venerable old age of 47 with HALF the style and grace as I have. It's not like you have a choice, you have to work with what you have.

Kevin,
Why are you freaking out, man? Seriously. Calm down about turning 40.

Sigh. Edited because I'm old and my keyboard spells things wrong.

OK ...that hit home...Nicely written. Wonder who that author is. :whistling:

40 is no big thing I'll be 41 in April lookin forward to it :D

It doesn't matter how old you are, as long as your crank still works without the help of little blue pills.

Doc.

Sam, nice post!

I have people telling me I'm getting old. I keep thinking to myself, so what, I heal fast and can still take a punch. So what's the big deal ???

Hey man, I see you're fixin to turn 40.....you freakin' out yet?

BTW, my wife wanted to know what I was laughing at so I read her Neal's post. She came in here and promptly saw Doc's "crank" reference and started laughing as well.

Hard to surpass the eloquence of either SamClemmons or Devil Doc on this one . . . so at 50, as of last October, let me just say this: at 40 everything you thought you knew about the world at 21 has had nearly two decades of road-testing in the real world, and if you've been paying attention at all, even a little bit, you've chucked what didn't work and all that's left is what DID.

You've had time as well to tackle a few honest-to-gawd real life challenges, face down a fear or three, survive the occasional tragedy, and find out what you're made of by virtue of what you've actually accomplished, not what you imagine you're capable of in your own mind.

There's a strong and sure inner confidence that comes from all that. Revel in it.

I've never understood the "hype" behind turning 40, 50, ect. I suppose that because I'm only 21 (22 in a few days) my opinions are a bit skewed in the matter, but if you surround the things you love, and love what you do till the day you die age shouldn't really be a factor. I realize that my opinions might change when I get to the point of turning 40 or 50 but as of right now I just live every day like its my last and enjoy life to the fullest. Happy pre-birthday brother!

I always hope that the extra year brings more wisdom, patience, and serenity.
A deeper love and respect towards those I cherish.
A hope that I've accomplished enough of the meaningful things; that those I leave behind someday will always want to keep a part of me with them.

Well you are turning 40 and I already feel like my body has aged 3000 years already in my poor short life span. I'll be happy if I even make it to 40 at the rate my health is.

Neal is eloquent. I'm parsimonious.
