If you had $50,000, what car would you buy?

A friend and I were talking about this last night. Suppose you have $50,000 to spend on a recent production car. What would you get?

Some of the new Caddy's are looking pretty damn hot. With the decline in quality from Mercedes and BMW, I'd look American or Japanese.

Agreed.

Very true. Mercedes and BMW are starting to tone down some of the high-end lines like the 5 series, and even introducing the 6 series. The SUVs are beginning to get into the market with Jeep and Ford and the likes. However, the Mercedes SLK 350 is still something I would buy if I had $50,000. :)

I'd much rather wait until I had $125,000 and get the S600 Luxury Sedan from Mercedes.

For a car, I'd have to go with the new Chrysler 300.

I'd get a mini-van, then spend the rest driving around the country buying all the Opus and Anejo's from every damned store I could find!

If it was cash, I would just fix up the little problems with mine, plus do a couple of little things I've been wanting to do. Not make it "fast and furious" just change out a few things. I love my mazda 626.

If it had to be a new car however...

While I'm generally very much "buy American", the crap that came out of Detroit for many years just completely turned me off. Went through several GM POS's owned by my Dad and Mom and they finally gave up and bought a Camery. 140K later, it's still a great car. I realize things are better now, but the nonsense we went through and the breathtaking arrogance of the dealer have probably turned me away from domestic cars permanantly.

In March we bought a new X3 (BeeEmm) for the wife. It wasn't 50K but we did get the sport package, 3.0 liter motor, etc. It's a very comfortable, very nice ride. No regrets there; after driving a bunch of cars in that price range, and after having this one for a few months, I'd do it again. I even get to drive it now and then, usually when it needs gas.... :p

If it were my car, it'd probably say "M3" on the trunk, or I'd count a bunch more pennies and get something that said "M5" on the trunk and then go looking for Corvettes....

My $00.02 - B.B.S.

Personally I would be embarrassed to drive a $50,000 car. Cars just don't impress me and they are a terrible investment. I guess if I had to I would go with an old classic car, maybe a 40's Mercury.

Just checked out the 300, but cars are too damn small
