identify cigar

I would rather smoke my cigars then let them sit around and end up some sort of "Grail" that can only be smoked on the most rare and special of occasions.

Everyday is a rare and special gift in my eyes:
Wake up next to my beautiful wife....calls for a stellar smoke
See my kids off to school....fire up the good stuff
One less day left in the Army.....break out the "special" stash
Heard a great song on the radio, survived stubbing my toe, got my teeth cleaned......

in the end, smoke what you like, like what you smoke, and as always YMMV

my point is cigars are priced for a reason I happen to stick to better quality sticks hence price point..

I'm glad you have such a straightforward system that works for you. Personally, I've smoked some expensive dog-rockets, and some cheaper sticks that were just wonderful. But what do I know. I'm an ignorant 30 something.

Welcome aboard. Hope you find something you can learn around these parts. Sorry for ruffling your feathers a bit. I just take offense to gross generalizations. Sort of like me walking into your house and telling you the proper way to clean your living room, and then insulting your wife while I'm at it.

Troll or be trolled, LOL!

I wonder how the box of Monte No. 2 will smoke? Started with the birth of my first grandson, am 3 cigars deep. I can attest to cigars going flat after less than 10 years.

Now the argument should be NC vs. ISOM aging. I can say without a doubt that there are no definitive answers. If you read our bible on ISOM's he states that most cigars benefit to at least 5 years of aging. NC cigars who knows since most have wrapper, binder and filler from multiple countries. I leave that there, as been said YMMV.

As for the new guy welcome aboard, hope that flak jacket is cinched on tight!

Thanks tone-ny with hilarious and true follow up Doc. I can say with personal experience the Diamond Crown Sanford's 90th I have been smoking all the way along. They now are smoking way better than when I first experienced them. Seems to me that all sticks have to be thought of individually. My greatest awakening, decades ago, was when I was introduced to trimming the foot while smoking. Cigar scissors are essential. I am looking forward to making my experience even better with ideas and experience on CP.

Just curious, what exactly does trimming the foot accomplish? It seems oddly unnecessary. Unless you have a shaggy or perfecto?

Trimming your cigar is the most important thing in smoking. Not trimming the foot which we burn but the draw end. It makes the cigar draw better and smoother less bitter flavor is accomplished. I trim my cigars at least a half dozen times. Maybe a 32nd to a 16th inch is needed. Scissors a must here, guillotines cannot get the razor sharp edge to trim properly. I even sharpen my own to get the right edge. I was waiting for the hatch on the Ausable with a friend. I seized the right moment and waded to him with his half smoked cigar. I asked if I could see his cigar. I trimmed his cigar then handed it back. I immediately turned and waded back to my spot and thought 3 2 1 and then he yells out "My cigar tastes better than when I lit it". I gave him a spare pair of scissors and he has never been without them. An untrimmed cigar is barbaric !

Ok so you are talking about trimming the cap during smoking, correct? If so that makes more sense.

The senior Mr. Padron uses his thumb nail. You know better than him? I dare you to go to the Cuban quarter in Miami and tell those folks how to smoke. They already think we haven't a clue. You'd be a big help, I'm sure.

Doc

So, you seem to be convinced trimming works, but you're not saying WHY it works.
I can think of a few reasons, but don't have those issues because I know how not to slobber or get excessive tars while smoking.

Trimming does work when tar builds up or you tend to slobber all over the cigar! Otherwise press on, when you diddle with your fiddle you forget to enjoy you cigar.

My grandfather used to squeeze the end on his cigar and poked with the wooden match then light it. Was the coolest thing I ever saw and he did it so quickly that you wondered what he was doing.

Trimming the cap is essential. How is totally a personal preference. Punch, fingernail, scissors, knife, sharp quality cutter, it all gets the job done.

are we still talking about cigars?
